   Who will become the new Indian Prime Minister in May 2009 after the general election? My favourite, Mayawati. What about you?

         Ok, you don't like Mayawati. Take your pick of these:
         
         - Sharad Pawar
         - Lalu
         - Jayalalitha
         - Chandrababu Naidu
         - Mulayam Singh
         
         Who of these do you think is going to sweep the hustings?

            I didn't say I don't like Mayawati. On the contrary, I think she has her strong points, and has a mass support which probably exceeds any of the politicians that you named above.
            
            On a serious note, let us consider the past few prime ministers. Since 1991, there has been only ONE prime minister, who was actually expected to become a prime minister. The person was AB Vajpayee. The others like PV Narasimharao, Chandrashekhar, HD Devegowda, IK Gujral and even Manmohan Singh were merely compromise candidates. Consider Chandrashekhar, who became PM when his party had a parliamentary strength in single digits. Or HD Devegowda, for that matter.
            
            If these people can become PM, Mayawati has a much better chance.

            Certainly no one likely go near the gates..
            -- Sharad Pawar is not liked by Australian cricket players.
            -- Lalu is not liked by Nithish Kumar.
            -- Chandrababu Naidu is not liked by erst-while NTR supporters.
            -- Mulayam is not liked by Maya.
            -- Jayalalitha- she dismissed 1.8 lakh state govt. employees   in one order and made history(2003). If time comes, and she becomes prime minister, she will dismiss 100 times that number and become internationally famous.

               I have no love lost for Sharad Pawar, but it will be a sad day indeed for Indian democracy if we select our PMs as per the likes and dislikes of Australian cricketers!
               
               I think Australian cricketers will have no objection if Sharad Pawar is elected PM. I don't think they will even notice!

   Why not try Narendra Modi, LK Advani, Pranab Mukerji (waiting for a long time) and Rahul Gandhi? Are they not entitled to become Prime Minister?  My first preference is Narendra Modi. For some illness, some medicines should be applied. He will clear all illness from India.

      Any Indian citizen over 25 years of age is eligible to contest elections and become the a PM. At least that is the theory.

   Well the wait is going to get over. The first phase of polling started today. The results will be out on May 16.
   
   One of the poll pundits have calculated that Maywati is likely to get 40 seats in UP, and much of these will be poached from Samajvadi Pary, the Congress and the BJP.
   
   Mayawati is also contesting across the country, so if she picks up an additional 10 seats outside UP, she will have nice block of 50 seats, which will give tremendous bargaining power.
   
   Jayalitha is unlikely to make it, because she can't speak Hindi and she is perceived as anti-north India.
   
   Advani's age is against him. At 81 he can't lead a young nation like India. And his track record against terror is suspect. He released dreaded terrorists in Kandahar.
   
   As for Narendra Modi, as long as Advani is there, he won't be the priministerial candidate of BJP. Also he is a communal politician who has no place in a secular country. Also, my reading is that BJP is unlikely to do well in the elections.
   
   That leaves us with a few more contenders. Take your pick:
   
   - Prakash Karat
   - Lalit Paswan
   - Navin Patnaik
   - Deva Gowda

      Mayawathi gets 5 % marks.. she depends upon upper caste 
                brahmins more than dalits for her victory.
      Jayalalitha gets 10 % she is notorious in her own state for her
                anti-people and anti-poor measures in her last stint
                as CM.
      Advaniji gets 25% marks. His age is a plus point.. experienced,
                stubborn, free from scandals.. While we talk of Babar
                mosque, we should also talk of hundreds of Hindu
                temples razed to ground in Kashmir before the mosque
                demolition. While talking about Kandahar, we should
                remember peoples demonstrations before parliament
                urging the govt. to release the passengers at
                any cost.
      Narendra Modi gets 20%. He is straight forward, stubborn. For
                some diseases, operation is  must. He is very much
                needed by the terrorists across our borders.
      Manmohan Singh gets 40% He is very cool even in difficult times.
      Prakash Karat gets 0.
      Deve Gowda gets 0. Even when he was PM, he was 0%.
