   They definitely are. It's the real reason why there is global warming here on earth. Our whole galaxy is warming up from our sun's solar storms but we are led to believe that it's us causing this damage, which is propaganda. Solar storms effect every planet in our solar system and are a big threat to our ozone layer.

   From what I understand about it (which is by no means everything there is to know) as long as we are tucked in snug and warm under a thick blanket of atmosphere, we are in no danger from normal solar eruptions.  It's when we decide to go tooling around in space that we put ourselves at risk.
   
   Of course, should the sun ever decide to fling off the grandaddy of all coronal ejections, we may want to stock up on aluminum foil.  :-)

   If memory serves, the sun will eventually incinerate the earth, according to those who know. As for your question:
   
   Anything is plausibly "a threat."
   In the end, no one can forecast his/her undoing -- or the future for that matter. Someone said that prediction is hard, especially when it concerns the future.

   solar eruptions occur quite regularly on surface of sun,they are not harmful unless they are very massive or powerful..solar storms ejects neutrons with high velocity..these high velocity neutrons will heat up the earth's crust..they interrupt satellite communications,they heat up the earths atmosphere

   Keep in mind that we're still in solar minimum. To have this much activity before solar cycle 24 maximum is a tell for things to come. We'll see how a minor CME event affects our communications and electric grid starting today.
   
   This went out of the sun's surface on August 7th, 2010. It's hitting us, they say, on August 10th, 2010.
   
   Dr. Kaku said on Fox News that we're in for a Y-Solar Storm event rivalling the Carrington event that melted transformers, set fire to telegraph offices, and caused the northern lights nearer to the equator. NOAA says it would take five years to a decade and a half to repair the United States' electrical grid, were this to happen.

   Most probably it is a threat since if it will occur sunspots on our star erupt and spew out flumes of charged particles that can possibly damage power systems.
