Hi everyone! In a couple of weeks, I will once again make the arduous journey by plane over to my little college on the East Coast. If anyone has any advice on how to make the most out of college, please post here! I'd love to hear what you have to say. Feel free to mention any of your own college blunders and misadventures!!

      What year are you Chris?
My advice, get as involved as possible! Join clubs/organizations, work on campus, become a student leader, network with professors/staff members. You could even start your own club. It isn't difficult at all. Attend on campus events. Yes classes are important... but you won't remember them as much as the people you meet and the things you do. I've learned so much outside of classes while in college it is unbelievable.

“You have four years to be irresponsible here. Relax. Work is for people with jobs. You'll never remember class time, but you'll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends. So, stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a paper due Wednesday. Spend money you don't have. Drink 'til sunrise. The work never ends, but college does..." - Tom Petty

I did everything that Tom Petty said in that quote, except I did it for the first three years. In the last year I gave it all up, lived in books, paid off a lot of the debt that I got myself in in the first three years and graduated with a First (in the UK, this is the highest degree).

I cant remember anything about the first three years whilst in uni, the rest of it was the best three years of my life. But I managed to have those amazing three years and consolidate all of the important stuff in the last year. I wouldnt change any of it for the world, not a single thing (except maybe a couple of the girls).

      Hello Chris,
I wanted to say, enjoy yourself!  We have all experienced failure in our lives, but the main thing is how we look at it. Read books and listen to audios about prosperity consciousness, positive thinking, and creative visualization. Ask yourself positive questions if you ask yourself a negative question you will get a negative answer.

Surround yourself with positive people, because if you surround yourself with quality people, it creates a quality life. If you have friends who are positive & successful then you will be the same.

Good luck , your life is headed in the right direction, just keep plugging!

      Sia

I miss college. Join clubs, and I don't mean nightclubs. Find a group that does the same things you like to do. Nearly every campus has a bunch of clubs to join. Sit outside and bask in the sunlight, meet people, relax, do homework, what's not to like about college?

I agree with Ryan, I wouldn't change a thing. I am the type of person who has to be busy 24/7. But I've made a lot of my life my college. And I love it! I work there, I take classes there, I go to events there, football games, and my friends are there. I'm now a senior and I don't want to leave in spring sad

Thanks for all the wonderful advice! In response to Colebabie, I will still be a sophomore Fall semester (since I decided to start a semester late), but come Spring, I will officially be a Junior.
Basically, I didn't really party at all first semester, then partied a bit too much second semester, and finally reached some kind of balance this past semester.
I feel I've finally adjusted to college life, but I'm always up for new advice.
I really liked that quote by Tom Petty. I have a few friends who live by that...it's arguable whether it serves them well...
I think it's all about balance though. Some people can party 5 out of 7 days and still make the grades, others (like me) need to focus more on straight academics to make it all work (especially with all the musicals and plays I do).
I seriously can't wait for school to start again though. SO EXCITED!
    Any stories??

No stories.  Not letting my daughter read this forum big_smile no ideas for the freshman big_smile

My daughter was on campus last year as a post secondary student, she'll move onto campus this year as a sophomore.

This is what I've told her to do:

Meet as many new people as possible.
Try out for the dance club.
Go to football, bball, hockey games, etc.
    Check out a Sorority
    Get involved in clubs
    Tutor
    HAVE FUN!
Let go and be free! You no longer are in high school - so its time to be yourself!
Its okay to be smart and a girl big_smile

Hey Chris, it's not so much about the parties as it is the relationships you make while in college.  I graduated 15 years ago and still have very close relationships with many of my college friends.

There is some validity in living in the here and now but you always have to have an eye on the future.  Experience everything you can and start building associations that will carry on throughout your life, if you're lucky.

I'm actually thinking of going back to college to get degrees in Creative Writing or Fiction Writing.

As for advice, study hard, do join groups if you find any suitable for you, and write on the side. And yes make friends of course. I am very shy and didn't make many friends while in college. But I am still rally close to a few HS friends.

Good luck! By the way do you know what classes you are taking yet?

Yeah I'm like you Chris. I have to have a balance between work and play. I have a friend who can party all night and ace an orgo test the next day... I envy him. But yeah, balance is the key. Like I said, get as involved as possible. I have my student government friends, my department friends, my volunteer friends, and my bio friends... a lot of them overlap of course. smile I will be starting PA school next summer, Tamarii, so yes I am continuing on to graduate school. However PA school is like 2 years of med school, so it will be nothing like my undergrad years... that I'll miss more than anything!!

My advice: Get drunk and stay that way until you graduate.

just be yourself and study very hard because hard work pays.don't pass thru school but let the school pass thru you so that by the time you graduate people will see it in you.
