When it comes to money are football (soccer) players in a world of their own?

I read a story where Jermaine Pennant received a call from his former club Real Zaragoza informing him that he left a Porsche at the train station for 5 months. He forgot he owned the thing! Is this just another confirmation that they are paid too much?

Athletes in the major American sports are also paid astronomical sums of money. I remember when Alex Rodriguez signed his $200 million contract a decade ago one magazine reported that he could buy something like 2000 Porsche 911 Carreras with that money.

They certainly get a lot of money. But on the other hand they provide entertainment for millions of people so in that sense you cannot give them a normal salary. But yeah, forgetting that you own a Porsche is indeed a sign that you have way too much money.

Pennant is an unusual case. He's had a lot of issues at the various clubs he played for including a spell in jail which he followed by having to play with an electronic tag after he got remission.

He reputedly was made a millionaire before he was even a 17 year old such was the determination of clubs to sign him

Yes without a doubt the top footballers of today are paid too much.  But the players are not to blame.  Would anybody refuse to take a pay rise because they felt it was morally wrong.  Players just like anybody else will naturally try to earn as much as they can.  They only have short careers so I don't subscribe to the theory that it is obscene.  If I were good enough, I know I'd be trying to rake in as much as I could

Football players are definitely paid to much, its no wonder that the uk is in recession - the premier league spends 1 BILLION POUNDS in salaries every year, samuel eto'o earns 350,000 a week and any premier league football player could work for a year and be set for life! put the money into things that matter like soldiers and doctors!
