Need help to create a blog on existing site

   I want to know how to create a blog with an existing website. I am having a website and already created a sub-domain for that, but I do not know how to create a proper blog.
   I mean do I need to install some software for that but my main concern is that it should not destroy the content of my existing web site.

      You can install onto your subdomain with no worries about losing your content on your regular domain.
      
      Who is your host?
      
      Yes, you need to install some software, Wordpress is the easiest and most common solution

   on the cpanel of your host there may be an icon that reads fantastico, click on in then in the left find where it says wordpress.  Click on that then new installation.  Your host will install the wordpress through fantastico onto your site.
   
   Once installed, you find the theme you want and uppload the theme through ftp to your subdomain where it says wp_content > wp_themes.
   
   Find the plugins you want and upload them through ftp to wp_content > wp_plugins
   
   log into your wordpress dashboard and activate your theme throught he appearance button and then activate your plugins through the plugin button and you are all set to start blogging.

      Thanks Richard for the details, I installed wordpress, but I'm facing one issue. It gets installed in blog.domain.com/wordpress and not on blog.domain.com.
      I registered on codex.wordpress.org but was not able to locate dashboard, can you pass me exact link to that.
      WordPress is completely new for me.

         Hmm, if you just followed the above instructions, than you may have missed a rather relevant step to your issue
         
         I imagine you created a subdomain already.
         
         so hopefully you pointed the install to:
         
         sub.domain.com and didnt allow it to to the preset which would install into a wordpress folder
         
         do you really want your address to be:
         
         http://www.sub.domain.com/wordpress!
         
         your dashboard is accessed at (currently)at
         
         http://www.sub.domain.com/wordpress/wp-admin
         
         so you want to uninstall that installation, and reinstall to the root folder of your subdomain (delete /wordpress)

            This is correct and I thought you had already set up your subdomain.
            
            Another way to log into your wp dashboard, after you delete it and re-upload it into your sub domain, is to just type in the url to your blog and through the temporary default theme you can login under the meta section in your sidebar.

            I un-installed the application, but when I'm trying to install, it is asking to provide 'Destination directory'. What should come here (by default, it is wordpress), I cannot leave it blank, as it is mandatory.

               the destination directory is  domain/(subdomain)
               
               or subdomain/domain
               
               depending on how your directory is viewed
               
               I use fantastico / cpanel and ftp for wordpress installations
               
               so I could help you better if you had answered "who is your host" or even better what installation method are you using
               
               with cpanel ..you can just delete /wordpress and it will install to your root folder..which is fine as long as you have your subdoamin selected (as it would overwrite your root folder on your main domain)

   Destination directory is sub-domain.domain.
   My control panel is powered by Plesk, and they have included wordpress application with their web-applications. I installed it from there only by selecting my sub-domain as destination.

To do this, add /wp-admin to the end of the address you installed Wordpress to (ex: http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin).       Instead of installing on sub-domain, I switched to domain/blog as it was not giving me option to install on the root of sub-domain. Thanks sunforged for the help and links that you provide.
