How was your teacher training course?
Tell me about your degree / pgce course. When did you decide to apply for a place on a teacher training cource? What are the strenghth and weakness of your course? What parts of the did you find most interesting and why? I was interested to read about your project of this period. How have you developed in your subject during your course?
It was good. I didn'y learn anything really new as to the methods of teaching, but some psychological insights as to the group work were quite new.
You can take all the teacher training courses in the world but there is nothing like good old OJT. You will learn more in one year in front of the classroom than all the courses you could ever enroll in.
My teaching certification came through an alternative certification program offered through my regions Alternative Education Service Center after earning my degree in Behavioral Science. The service center provided some of the classes and some were a cooperative endeavor with a local university offering transferable masters level credits as part of the program. The program itself took one year to complete and ended in the required state teacher examinations for content and pedagogy. The major strength of the program for me was two fold. First, I was able to secure a teaching job at full pay and obtain emergency certification while participating in the program. Secondly, the not inconsiderable expense of said program was deducted by my district incrementally from each paycheck for my first year. I found the real life required observations of special needs classrooms to be the most interesting part though the practice tests were in hind sight the most beneficial aspect.
I have to agree with Husky1970. Assuming you know your subject matter and something of classroom management, nothing will give you better training than diving in with a room full of young minds. I have found it also helps to actually ask the students for their ideas on how to improve learning. After you wade through the mandatory sea of “make it more fun” answers, you will find some that actually explain good ways to do just that.

I have been practising yoga for a long time (on and off) and now I am at the stage in my life where I want to do something more useful in my life than just working to earn money. I am an engineer but will be doing a month's residential Yoga Teacher Training course in the Sivananda Yoga Centre...

Must teachers always entertain students in the classroom? Why or why not?

You can never tell when accidents may happen. In a split second a person could suffer a heart attack, choke, or drown. Considering that this are life threatening conditions, immediate response is necessary. There is a saying that it is better to know first aid and not need and know...

I would like to work abroad teaching English. But the number of options of courses to take to get a TEFL qualification seems a bit confusing. Is it better applying for the most expensive or is that not necessary?

If you are or have ever been a teacher, what is your birth order in your family?Sounds crazy that I'm asking, I know, but I'm wondering if most teachers who feel successful in their jobs are from a family with siblings. I have a feeling that only children, for example, prefer to work...
