Has anyone had any luck self-publishing an ebook through Amazon?

I have enough content to put together to make a couple books, some nonfiction some novels. Has anyone self-published an ebook on Amazon or otherwise and made any significant income? I don't want to waste my time with formatting and such if it's not profitable. Please include figures.

I know of someone who has a site that give great information and insight on this subject. But...I don't have it with me. You can send me an email, and when I find it I'll pass it on to you.

      Hi Seth,

Dont self publish. Avoid it. Unless you have 20 k to 50 K to use in advertising... Send your book to publishing companies. I wrote a book, had it professionally edited and self published it. I sell it on Amazon, but so does everyone else. I am fortunate that I sent the same self published book to publishing companies and one of them picked up the book.  It will cost you about 1 k to get it formatted depending on the pictures ect.. I had my self pub ebook on ebay for a while.. The idea is great, selling bits of memory for about half the price of the book. I just want to say that unless you have a way to spend all day marketing your book, how is anyone going to know about the book. You can only post it on facebook and linked in so many times before your friends ignore and block you on FB..  I dont know man, its such a pain.. when you self publish, it becomes a job.. a very low paying job..

The thing is I already have the content and capabilities to format it myself in my spare time, so it won't take too long to put together. I'd market it through my blog. I figure if I could make any cash it'd be worth it. Congrats on getting published
