Should a government allow cigarette sales knowing well that cigarette smoking causes cancer?
Every cigarette smoker knows smoking causes lung cancer, yet he or she smokes. Isn't this suicidal? By letting open trading in cigarettes, is a government abetting suicides? If opium producers pay the government huge taxes, will it let open opium sales?
They would never ban smoking because of the taxes they receive from the sales of cigarettes, skoal, cigars, etc. Neither will they ban the sales of alcohol. Even though drunk drivers kill so many people each year, the government is not going to prohibit the sales of alcohol either. All sin taxes are big business.
Sale of cigarette should not be allowed. In fact, tobacco growing should be banned. In the Philippines, taxes collected from sales of cigarettes is 30 million pesos while the cost of medication of victims of tobacco costs 188 million pesos, not to mention deaths from cancer and heart disease. Farmers are willing to plant other crops if there is no market for tobacco. I have several Hubs on tobacco. Political will and leadership must break the cycle that feeds on tobacco.

Do they have enough power to do it, or do some MPs smoke themselves?
