How dark does the red liquid for a hummingbird feeder need to be?
I think if the feeder has red on it, then you don't need to worry about coloring the liquid. My mother has several humming bird feeders (with red or orange plastic) that she doesn't color. And there seems to be a steady stream of birds drinking from it.
Do not use any dyes at all. A simple recipe for hummingbird nectar. 1 part sugar to three parts water. Put the water in a microwave for about 1 minute 30 seconds or boil it on the stove and then add the sugar. You can save it in a plastic drink bottle that has been washed, in the fridge. That is all I use.
You don't need any color, I've seen hummingbirds drink clear nectar. There was this one clear commerial nectar with electrolytes I used with that was a big hit. But you can make your own with granulated sugar and water.
