How can we help students value their opportunity of a GREAT education before they deem it too late?
There are many children who come to school and bully or otherwise misbehave. They seem to have no idea how vastly our world is changing and, as a result, competition for careers is growing greater everyday. There must be something that can turn this awful trend around.
LeslieAdrienne, it is a hard situation, but I do believe that if both educators and parents put their heads together and become dedicated to a solution, we can help or children who have no idea at this point what they are throwing away.
I have seen this issue in some children and believe it all begins at home. If the parents are good examples or choose to become good examples, the child will have much better chances of being productive, happy and positive. The parents don't even have to be highly educated or deep pocketed, but DEDICATED to giving their children the guidance, skills and lessons that they need to PREPARE THEM FOR LIFE.
If the children are behaving badly and the parents do not enable or allow that behavior once it's brought to their attention or once they personally see it, the child will have a better chance of creating and reaching their life's goals such as living a comfortable or affluent and happy life. For children of neglectful or inattentive parents or parents who would rather be their friends, even if there are positive influences or mentors, those positive influences and mentors can often be completely obliterated by what they are seeing and experiencing at home.
I totally agree with the things that you have said, and I am happy to see that you are not advocating that we just throw money at this issue. We need a lot more than money, even though it helps too.
I think there are several issues at play. First there are some states that rank so poorly in education (mine is near the end of the list in quality) that even the kids will say that it's pointless. Another issue is that parents have more on their plate now than they use to. Life is busier. One parent is not home for most families. Mothers either have to or choose to work instead of staying home to provide the guidance needed.
As for the children misbehaving, I think a lot of that comes down to lazy teachers. One of my children is extremely smart, but he suffers with Aspergers. The teachers at his public school don't seem to understand that once they stop challenging him he will act up out of boredom. Teachers just want me to dope him up to make their day easier. Why not keep him drug free and just take a few extra minutes a day to have an extra couple of things for him to do?
So in my opinion there are way too many factors messing things up. If only teachers and parents could work together more to create a balanced situation I think children would do better.
I agree that all students need lessons worthy of their attention, and that demands qualified teachers. Money is useful, but NOTHING can replace EXCELLENT teachers who should be paid their worth.
The education should be about earning money. Formal education is over rated because most who have it know very little about money. Ultimately when everyone awakens from the education system, health and money seems to be part of the driving force for a good life. I would highlight creativity, selling and business skills in particular. Each person must decide what works for them. Many people are making millions of dollars without college educations today.
You are right, but my point is that the money for education should be to find excellent teachers also because they will give our children a better chance at an effective education and everyone can't succeed without one. Some do,but they seem rare.

What steps do you think we should take to improve our education system?I'd like to see more courses in our high schools that embrace the arts and the humanities, and performance-based assessments as opposed to "teaching to the test."

Teachers often complain about low pay; the claim to be overworked and under-compensated. The say that they deserve to be paid more, since they are responsible for teaching the next generation. Yet, when the subject of the ever falling standards and performance of students comes up, they rarely have...
