Parents, how do you handle technology and your little ones?

In a world of smart phones, video game consoles and tablets, how do you limit their time with the devices? What do you do to balance it out with other stuff - like reading or playing outside?

I have 3 children, all love their gadgets. I think a lot of it is great, but we have loose rules we do follow. Video games are limited to one hour a day. Playing on their tablets is limited to 30 minutes a day. The only way out of those rules is if they are playing something educational or playing with a parent. My 3 year old will often get an extra bit of tablet time because we are playing educational games on it. No tablets or video games are allowed for the kids after 6:30pm. I want them to have a chance to relax before bed time, and video games keep them awake.

I agree with all of what you said. I have two kiddos, and I have been trying to figure out a good time limit to put on the tech stuff.

I keep my preschool age daughters ipad packed away in my room, I will sometimes turn it on and let her play with it when I want to go an have a nice long shower!  I don't get it out at any other time, it's just an occassional evening treat.  She reads the "Read It To Me" books, fairy tales, where she can press the button to turn the pages, and move the fairies in the story.  And a few Preschool apps - Puzzle's and paint.
