Will aerating my lawn do any good?

I live in the Southeast US and we have Bermuda grass for our lawn. Over the past couple of years, our lawn has developed some bare spots. Our lawn care company, who we use for fertilizing and weed control, has strongly suggested we have our lawn aerated this Spring. I've had a little experience with aeration, and I wonder if this process really does anything for our lawn, or is the company just trying to sell us another service? Would love to hear from anyone with experience with this!

Yes, it usually helps. Soil gets compacted over time. Aerating helps to get air space back into the soil; roots, water and air can all grow deeper. Sometimes a light topdressing - spreading a thin layer layer of compost and/or topsoil over the lawn after you aerate - also helps. It increases organic content in the soil.

You can aerate a lawn yourself if you want to and are able to do the work. Most rental companies have aerators. There are probably videos online. Saves some money, but it is work!

Thanks, Act 3.  I haven't heard of topdressing - I'll have to ask our lawn care company about it.  I appreciate all your information and help!

Yes! aerating the lawn annually and dethatching every year or two is good for warm season grasses. Those bare spots may be caused by insects like chinch bugs too. You may ask them to test it (or run one yourself) before the expense of the other services if cost is a concern to you. http://www.ehow.com/how_6175147_test-chinch-bugs.html

Yikes, I hadn't considered that our problem might be insects.  I'll have to look into this.  Thanks for the link and information!!  Much appreciated smile
