   If yo pt certain foods in the refrigerator uncovered they often take on the smells of other things in their with them. Similarly, if the people you associate with are unsavory their bad traits will rub off on you.

      Have you heard the saying, "One rotten apple in the basket affects the rest?"    What about "Birds of a feather flock together?"  Would these be a derivative of the posted idiom?

      Yes, they would both have a very similar meaning. "Birds of a feather flock together" is not necessarily a bad connotation however.
