I understand the mechanics of adding a product, but I am worried of hurting my google traffic or hurting my hub's quality in the eyes of hubpages.
The guidelines say that the product must be relevant and be something which I have personal experience with. Does this mean that I should write a review in the first person?
Also, can anyone give me tips on where I should place a product hub. As an example, I have this hub https://owlcation.com/humanities/How-Do … in-Italian which is getting a fair bit of traffic. I was thinking of adding an amazon capsule for some language learning software. Can you give me advice on where would be the best place to put it within this article or should I avoid doing so completely?

Firstly, don't use Amazon capsules at all. HP is discouraging their use because they won't show up for any reader who has an ad-blocker running. So use an in-text link.
Secondly, the Amazon item must be 100% relevant to your article, therefore, the only link you could add to your 'Hello' hub would be something that teaches you how to say 'hello' in Italian. A teach yourself Italian DVD would not be suitable. It's that tight, these days.
It's helpful if the item can appear in the text in a completely natural way. For example, "The pencils I used to complete this drawing are Prismacolor. I find that their qualities of softness and saturated color make them perfect for this kind of work."
Or, if it's a book, you can say, "As Jonny Noone says in his book 'Book Title Here', there is no business like show business and that we all should dance like nobody's watching." You can also include a quote from the book.
There's a subtle art to getting it right, but once it clicks, your articles will be able to carry Amazon links. However, not all hubs are suitable. I never try to shoehorn in a link if it won't work.
This is not good advice. HP is not discontinuing Amazon. I just got a $46 payout from Amazon yesterday and have been making money steadily from it for years. Yes, people use ad blockers, but obviously many do not.
To earn and maintain the quality of my hubs, I always use in text ads and only one or two within a hub. They always are relevant to the topic and I always explain why I or someone I know uses the product as opposed to other similar products. They should appear within the normal flow of the text, not just be thrown into it randomly. Also, I try to discuss products that are difficult for people to find and make sure that the product will meet some need that they have. It works, and I'm living proof of that. I don't think HP is about to dump Amazon anytime soon because they and we make good money from those ads.
I took Ragged's comment to mean that Amazon capsules are being discouraged, not that Amazon ads in general are. And I think she's right - the capsules are often snipped while similar in-text links are left alone.
But I'm curious - do you not use the HP Amazon program to take advantage of the higher commission rates? It makes a huge difference to me to get that 8.5% all the time rather than 4%.

I tend to use photos of Amazon products from the product's page when I'm promoting them on an article and just credit them to Amazon. This probably isn't such a good idea, but if the product is being promoted would they mind I wonder? The complication of course is the seller on Amazon might not own...
