be frugal with money, do not overspend on items that are not necessities, and stay away from credit card debt...

yep, I figured this out a few years ago the hard way

Use your credit cards but rarely and pay them off quickly.  Never carry more than 30 percent on your cards.
Mind you, if you can pay off yor house and car as I have then you don't really have to worry too much about this bullshit credit score that we all have decide is so damn important.
hell, if we could pay cash every time we buy something these scores would have much less meaning and importnace.

agree with you completly, cash is the way to go...I unfortunatly do not have a paid off home but my cars are paid off ( no, they are not new cars, but new cars are just a materialistic status show-off for most people anyway )..

I believe before their were credit cards and all these high interest loans, people were much bettter off even though they did not have the technology or many of the items we have access to these days, but they never did without and people took care of one another and trust was a big issue..people could trust to run a tab at the grocer and he knew they would pay him back every penny..

Unfortunatly, I do not think we will ever see tose days again, and it is a shame

true, but most of us have mortgages and cars that are not paid off. I agree, people would not worry about their credit score so much if they had. Thanks.

Only have 1-2 credit cards.  Carry a low balance or no balance.  Pay cash for things when you can.  NEVER co-sign for ANYONE

    wsp2469,

Even if you aren't taking out new loans you need to be somewhat mindful of your score.  Things like cellphone, cable tv and insurance companies check your credit.  Insurance rates can vary widely based on your credit score.  If you are about 700, which you probably are if you don't take out much credit, then you are right. It doesn't matter whether you have a 721 or 805.

If you have old yet closed accounts with delinquencies (30 days late and so on), mail a letter to your former creditors and ask them to either delete the delinquencies or the accounts.

If you are looking to raise your credit score and have a bunch of credit cards, DON'T close them out! Even if they have a zero balance, do not close the account!!

If you close accounts you lower your available credit and any debt you have will then make up a larger percentage of your available credit. That will lower your score.

Closing the account can make your credit history look shorter, and THAT will also lower your score. Put the cards in a drawer somewhere and don't use them. But do not close the accounts either!!

If you have a poor credit score then try the following:
    - pay your bills on time
    - do not use credit cards for any purchase (if you can't pay for it, you don't need it, unless it is a medical need)
    - Cut down on your expenses so you can pay off your debt which will help improve your credit score

Paying down your accounts which lowers your debt to credit ratio seem to have the greatest impact.
