   Can you believe it?  The government may have actually underreported the real number of unemployed and underemployed.
   
   
   
   FYI, that last part is bunk.  The real reason the "official" numbers are lower is because the only numbers reported are people who are receiving unemployment benefits.  People who have run out or are no longer looking are not counted.  Wait, didn't we just pass a bill a few months ago extending benefits?  So the problem must have been much worse than we have been told.  Just goes to show how far we can trust "our" government.

   underemployed are those people seeking another job to compensate for their another job?? or people who are already employed and want additional hours but there is no available employment?

      Pretty, underemployed means people who are employed but at jobs that don't match up to their skills.

      Underemployed usually means working a part time job.  Sometimes it can mean taking a job that pays less than what you were making before.  Which definition is used usually depends on the point the politician or talking head is trying to make.

   Have been un-employed for about a year now and cannot seem to find anything worthwhile. I send out resumes and get responses back from employers saying they have received over 300 resumes for 1 position. I gues I will have to join the under-employed.

   I wrote a several hubs about my husbands unemployment journey & finding employment.  I'll say it again, 300+ people were laid off at the same time, those (that we know) WILLING to RELOCATE are now gainfully employed, the others are collecting their unemployment checks because severance has run out & they refuse to look outside of the box.  My hubby had four excellent job offers in the 4.5 months he was laid off.  He still gets one or two calls a week asking him to interview. 
   
   Think outside the box!  Moving isn't that bad

      Agreed, Jane.  But, what if you can't sell your house?  Our real estate market is the pits of the world, nothing is selling or moving.  There's no way we could afford two places of residence.  We have a few more weeks until my husband's out of a job.  Our house will not sell, period.  By the way, it won't rent either.

   The Government tracks stats on people who are "eligible" for unemployment. That's it.  It's not in the financial interest of companies to have unemployed people on their records... it costs them money.  So no one talks about the people who are fired unjustly and never receive benefits because their companies fight them.
   
   Bottom line is the number of REAL unemployed and Underemployed workers far exceeds the Government Number.  The question is by how much?
   
   I also find it baffling when there is continued talk of a Jobless Recovery.  Like the Economy just starts churning but people don't have jobs.  That's the Governments Definition of recovery I suppose.
   
   Ironic Twist?  I read this and it "stuck"... it's a recession when your neighbor looses their job, it's a depression when you lose your own.

    Also not included in the “numbers” are former business owners, independent subcontractors and others that earned a living other than as an “employee” and that are not eligible for unemployment benefits.

    Underemployed covers those of us who have not lost our jobs but have had our salaries cut.
    My income went down by a 5 figure number in 2009, but I still have the same job I've held for close to ten years.
    I don't count in the stats, and since I am still employed full time, I cannot get aid. (Even for my medical bills which I cannot afford - I'm going without my medication. )
