We just got done with a super-cool health hub contest here, and that got me to thinking that community things of that nature would be cool to have more often - or in different ways.

One idea I came up with was some sort of charity event where we could choose to donate a percentage of our earnings to charity for a specific period of time.

Here is a rough draft proposed format:

--Hubbers can click some sort of box if they so choose that will allow them to donate 5% of their impressions to charity for the month (some sort of separate tracker by HP to track these earnings).

--Hubbers then make a hub about their favorite charity and it goes to a special category or tag where other "about charity" hubs are.  Visits to these hubs are measured - or some sort of voting system is instituted and the top five most visited or voted charities will get money - or money will be split up based on overall percentage of traffic or votes garnered.

I would love to see what you all think of this, and if you think doing something of this nature would be something that this community would do.

    Thoughts, comments, or additional ideas?

Idea 1:  If you wish to be able to give web earnings to charity, you should go visit Squidoo.com <snipped referral link> and build pages there, as that's one of the founding concepts of that site, and they are already all set up for that sort of thing.  HubPages developed in such a way that site admin does not have to handle or monitor any monies for site users, and I don't think they are going to start doing it now.

Idea 2:  That sounds like a voting system that is waaay too easily gamed.

I realize that this is one of the fundamental concepts of Squidoo.  I also realize that monetization and user earnings are set up differently between the two sites as well.  I never latched on to Squidoo, and I don't plan to start because I am happy with the system here and making decent money with it.  HP wouldn't have to mettle with user earnings - all they would have to do is set up separate trackers within their affiliate accounts to track an extra 5% (or w/e) of impressions.

I agree that the current plan for a voting system may not be the strongest, but this is all a rough idea.  I posted it here to get some feedback, gauge interest, and hopefully strengthen it with ideas from other users.

Having seen other community events and contests in the past, I know that the community here is powerful.  I think we could all band together and really do something amazing.  If there turns out to be a lack of interest, or nothing happens, it won't be a huge deal - I will continue to give to charities personally.  I just know that there is strength in numbers - and wanted to see of others shared a vision for affecting positive change through a community effort.
