5 of the Best New PC Games for your Old Computer

Updated on January 4, 2011

Wondering if your older computer can handle any of the newer games? Is it all graphics, high definition textures and the latest video cards? Never fear – I have compiled a list of what I believe are the best new PC games that will work on your older computer!

World of Goo

World of Goo was developed by indie game studio ‘2D Boy’ – which consists of a core team of two guys. It was released to rave reviews and is a physics based puzzle / construction game which involves playing with black goblets of ‘Goo’. Not only is it deliciously weird and fun, it will also run on your old computer no worries.

Torchlight

Often referred to as the unofficial sequel to Diablo 1 & 2, this hack ‘n slash RPG is a diamond of the genre, and will see a many gamer through to the release of Diablo 3. Runic Games, whose founders all worked on the original Diablo series, have created a game that is both fast & smooth with the added bonus of running well on lower-end machines. If you enjoy relaxing with a drink to slash your way through hordes of monsters, then rest assured you will have a blast with Torchlight.

Plants vs Zombies

A brilliant twist on the classic ‘Tower Defense’ style of gaming from PopCap Games. This game just goes to show that if you take a much used genre, but do it right and with flair, then there is nothing stopping you from creating a great game.

The point of Plants vs Zombies is to protect your house from hordes of zombies using various types of plants as defence. It will definitely demand much of your free time with its addicting gameplay, but it certainly won’t demand a gaming computer. Enjoy this one on your old desktop or netbook!

Braid

An independent release from software developer Jonathon Blow – this ingenious platform and puzzle game revolves around the idea of time. You can reverse time and do all sorts of fun things to make your way through the game. The artwork is a breath of fresh air (but no extreme video card required!) and took over a year for web-comic artist David Hellman to complete. Get this one cranking on that old PC!

Super Meat Boy

The Super Meat Boy website describes Super Meat Boy as, ‘a game where you play as a boy without skin whos girlfriend who is made of bandages gets kidnapped by a fetus wearing a tuxedo wearing a top hat and a monocle’.

If that isn’t quirky enough for you, then you spend way too much time on the internet! Super Meat Boy is a platform game developed by Team Meat. With a score of 91.67% at GameRankings, if a challenging platformer is what you are after, then it is hard to go past this one.
