Summer Fun for Everyone

7 Super Summer Suggestions for Siblings!

Wow, that's a mouthful! Why did I pick this for my topic and title? Simple, I've experienced the summer 7's - I'm one of 7 siblings, and each summer my parents had to be creative trying to come up with different fun suggestions for the family. Believe me, it was challenging at times, but somehow we all got through the summer with fun.

Take a look at some of the things we did to have a super summer with our siblings. Be sure to leave a comment and let me know what kinds of things your family does during the summer months for fun and entertainment. Enjoy!

1 - Go to the Children's Park and Meet New Friends this Summer

One of the most fun things my family and I like to do is make new friends. Going to a local park is a great way to meet people from your neighborhood. It's also a good way to give parents a break.

Kids make friends easily in community facilities, so why not take advantage of the summer days by encouraging your children to make new friends.

Once a week trade off with other parents in taking the kids to the park. This way all the children get to play outdoors and socialize away from home. Besides, even the kids need some time away from their parents once in a while.

2 - Summer Siblings Picnic in the Park or Backyard

There are times when it just isn't possible to get away, and that's when a parent really needs to be creative in their activities with the children. It was fun to eat outdoors with friends and family, but sometimes there wasn't anyone else around except our family.

During those times I liked to plan a picnic with all the things my nephews liked to eat. I can even remember having a big picnic in our livingroom one day when it was raining. For me, it was one of the most fun picnics we ever had.

3 - Go Camping & Bring A Friend

As with most large families, camping is something we did a lot of during my childhood. I can't tell you how many places we went camping actually, but it was a lot. There were so many things to do all day from swimming, mini golf, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing to singing around the campfire late at night.

Most of the time we camped with other families (I suppose this was to keep my parents company while we were all off during the day). It is no wonder that my parents ended up owning a campground of their own in later years. (That's their campground in Tennessee in the photo.)

Over the years the family thinned out as we all grew, and my younger siblings were able to bring along some friends to fill out the tribe. Be sure to get permission from the child's parent or guardian before heading out on your adventure. Gather any medical information and phone numbers in case of emergency as well for a precaution.

While we were there, we purchased some beeswax candles and melts from one of your vendors and I am trying to remember the name of the company. Maybe you could help us with this? We loved their beeswax tart melts so much that I was hoping that they have a website so we could order more since we live a couple of hours away.

Flying A Kite Fun for Everyone!

4 - Fly and Be Free Kiting Time

One of the best times I had with my students and nephews was when we flew kites. We ran, played and laughed for hours as we watched each others kites soar high with some ending up in the trees.

In the classroom one of our follow-up reading activities was for each student to make their own kite. I got in on the fun and built one myself, but it didn't turn out as good as theirs. Maybe my imagination needed stirring! Even though mine didn't fly quite as well, the entire class had a wonderful time making memories.

Take some time making memories with your family and friends in the summer by flying kites together.

5 - Ice Cream, Ice Cream Get Your Ice Cream

Having ice cream was a real treat at our home, because it was quite rare. Sure we had it sometimes at home, but actually going to an ice cream parlor I can only remember happening a few times.

Why not put a few dollars away and plan on an ice cream outing for your family. Go all the way and have fountain sodas, sundaes or even hot dogs and ice cream. Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor was a favorite of ours, but they have since closed their chains unfortunately.

Friendly's is another great place to take the family for ice cream. I love their creamy flavors, and the sundae's are huge!

Bring along the camera to be sure you capture the fun and family event. You'll be glad you did.

6 - Summer Tree House Building for the Family

Most kids that I know have always dreamed of having a tree house of their own. When I was around 9 years old we lived in a place that had a big barn. Even though it had a hayloft you could look out of from the top of the barn, it still wasn't a tree house.

Here are a few tree house plans that you could do with your family over the summer.

Just think of all the time they'll be playing in it and not be in the house watching tv or on the computer. It's a great place for kids to gather and bring back imagination into playtime.

7 - Swimming Fun for Everyone

I was blessed to grow up on the East Coast where there were a lot of bodies of water. We could go swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, a bay, lake, creek or large pond.

There was water in every direction you went.Sometimes when we were camping there was the option of going skiing in the lakes or swim in the campground pools.

I preferred the pools (and not the mucky waters in some of the lakes). No matter where we chose to swim, there was an opportunity for fun whether it was riding on someone's shoulders or dunking a person underwater.

Pick your "pond" and have some fun in the water with your family this summer. Be sure to wear the proper clothing, suncreen and hat. Carry bottled water with you too.
