The Hobbit Toys, Games, Puzzles & Other Merchandise For 2012

Updated on March 26, 2012

If you are wondering what kind of merchandise, games, puzzles and toys we will be getting based on The Hobbit then you are in the right place. Here we will take a look at some new Hobbit puzzles, games and other things that are going to be released to coincide with the movie which comes out at the end of 2012. So if you are after anything like this related to The Hobbit then you should find it on this page.

The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey is part one of Peter Jackson’s long awaited prequel to Lord Of The Rings. This is set to be one of the biggest films of all time and so there are plenty of opportunities for companies to jump on the bandwagon and bring out things that relate to the movie. So on this page we are going to take a look at some of things that will be coming out in late 2012.

Action Figures

The Hobbit Action Figures

First up then some action figures based on The Hobbit. Back in 2011 Warner Brothers signed a deal with toy company The Bridge Direct. Although this was a surprise to some this company has several members who worked on LOTR toys and so there is plenty of experience here to help create some memorable toys. Although we have not yet been given any specifics we are expecting to see some very detailed action figures based on the main characters from the movie. The Bridge Direct has also stated they will probably be bringing out some replica weapons such as ‘Sting’ which is of course Bilbo’s sword, an Orcrist Sword and a Dwarven Battle Axe.

As with The Lord Of The Rings, as well as seeing official action figures we are likely to see plenty of unofficial ones. The company with the rights though are The Bridge Direct and they will be hoping to dominate the market in this respect and bring out some really good toys that will really give them a foothold in the global market. Look out for these figures late 2012.

Hobbit Lego

The Hobbit Lego

One of the biggest and most lucrative deals in the run up to the release of the film has without a doubt been with Lego. After many years of speculation regarding Lord Of The Rings Lego, Warner Brothers have finally struck a deal reported to be worth a very large sum. Now Lego have the rights to both LOTR and of course The Hobbit. We are seeing seven new Lord Of The Rings Lego sets released over the summer months and then later in the year we will be seeing Hobbit Lego sets. This is massive news for Lego fans as people have been waiting for this for many years.

When it comes to what kind of sets to expect from the Hobbit, that is still up for debate. With this being a two part movie it is expected that Lego will roll out sets gradually. So possibly at the back end of the year we will have sets involving the Dwarves and Trolls, maybe Gollum and his cave, possibly one from the Shire and who knows what else. Then next year we might see sets based on Mirkwood and The Lonely Mountain. Lego have spent a lot of money to get this deal done with Warner Brothers so it is likely they will bring out quite a few sets over the coming years to make that money they have invested back. There is certainly lots to look forward to when it comes to Lego based on the two movies.

Jigsaws & Card Games

Another company who recently got involved were Ravensburger. If you are not familiar with the name they are synonymous with producing high quality jigsaw puzzles and other similar products. The deal they this German company have signed with Warner Brothers gives them the rights to both The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. We are expecting both 2D and 3D puzzles and also a range of card games based on the Hobbit.

Ravensburger are a company with an excellent reputation and they have been around for a long time so now doubt we will get some excellent toys and games from them. When you look online there are already quite a few old Hobbit jigsaws knocking about. Many of these are based on the old animated version of LOTR which came out way back in 1978. No doubt though Ravensburger will take us swiftly into the 21st century with some stylish and modern design ideas.

Another company to recently get involved is Cryptozoic Entertainment. This company specalise is role play card games and in March they annouced that they had signed a deal giving them the rights to bring out six games over the coming years. The first release will be in the fall of 2012 and will be a Lord Of The Rings Deck-Building game. Then at the end of 2012 to coincide with the release of the first Hobbit movie they will release two Hobbit games, one another Deck-Building game and one a Trading Card game. In 2013 we will see three more games released one of which will be a board game. So as you can see, there are going to be plenty of card games out there on the market over the coming years.

More Merchandise From The Films

The fact is that as the film gets closer and closer other companies will no doubt be looking to get in on the act. We are expecting Warner Brothers to be signing more deals with more companies in the coming months to allow various other forms of merchandise from the film. Along with all the official gear there will no doubt be a wave of cheap unofficial gear that will hit the shops after the film is released. By early 2013 we will probably be overwhelmed with Hobbit merchandise based on the first film. Then a year later it will start all over again.

It has been over a decade since we were given our first taste of the epic Lord Of The Rings movies. The Hobbit has to be one of the most hotly anticipated films of all time. As the hype surrounding the films builds up through the year more and more people will be getting involved and the chance for companies to make money will increase as well. By the end of 2012 we will be swamped with toys, puzzles, figures and a whole host of other Hobbit merchandise. Some of it will be welcome, some not so much so. As the release of The Hobbit gets ever closer, will you be swept up in the excitement?
