Well, I haven't played RoN in such a long time, and I'm not sure if you're even watching this question anymore, since it's been ~7 weeks, but here goes:
I recommend a quick expansion strategy. At lower difficulties, the computer takes its sweet time to advance in ages. If you pick a civilization that gets bonuses to city-building (Bantu with the +1 City Limit come to mind here), then you can take the time to build up quickly. Get a tower as soon as you hit Classical and research level 1 Attrition (forget the upgrade name, but it's researched at the Tower).
