    Memorizing through effort vs passive

Is it just me, but unless I consciously TRY to remember something, it doesn't stick.
If I were to read an article just for fun, I would finish it with barely an idea from the article, but when I actually try, I can clearly remember the important points and more. That is the same for everything else I do. I have to consciously try to remember almost anything. Is that the same with you?

Yes most definitely if I just skim it I just get the gist and nothing more, Wikipedia is making me lazy these days as I know the knowledge is there for the plucking.

I find that it depends a lot on my level of interest and motivation to remember.  I can read something casually and retain it if I am interested in the subject but it takes effort if I am trying to remember something for the sake of remembering it.
