The benefit is to figure out a way to win. To out think your opposition. To win the game in spite of losing or sacrificing pieces. Life is the same way. In chess, a person may have only a few pieces left...... down for the count, about to lose the game, but with one right move, checkmate. Life is about making the right moves. If you make the right moves at the right time, you win the game.
I think one of the main benefits is the ability to think a few steps ahead and absorb all the information that the board is giving you. With so many different pieces that have their own options it can really test your brain as you consider all the possible movements.
