Let’s face it games and gaming have been with us since time immemorial. Some of its uses are for entertainment, social gatherings, gambling, teaching and training, prophecy/fortune telling, and, yes, determining the fate of an individual or people seen with casting lots in the Old Testament. Why there are even those who have postulated the theory that we live our lives in one big game simulation created by some higher power.

The basic premise could be considered as being nature itself – survival of the fittest. We have a perceived or known reward, risk assessment, and the decision of yes or no to act. And, too, the adventuresome spirit as well as fun, fun, fun.

This OP seeks your view of the growing phenomena of digital gaming today. How much do you see it today in society? Do you think it benefits the individual, society(s), and the world as a whole? Is it worth speculating on while remembering that in and of itself is gaming?

Some interesting facts for digital gaming to consider are:
** 3.0 billion players worldwide, which is 37% of the world population.
** 2021 $180 billion worldwide industry while projecting 2024 to be $260 billion
** Used in business, education, and the military for training
** There are formerly recognized E-sports competitions worldwide with professionals earning big bucks and school sponsored teams like any sport
** One impact in the news about it is China restricts players under 18 to 3 hours per week on any device saying “growing addiction to what it once described as ‘spiritual opium’.”
** The different digital devices are smart phone, console, laptops and desktops, and handheld devices like the Nintendo Switch.
** Some large corporations heavily involved and investing in it are Sony, Microsoft, and Tencent

    Players think games offer:

    ** Mental stimulation
    ** Relief from stress
    ** Learn problem solving skills
    ** Bring joy – happiness
    ** Making friendships
    ** Family time together

Playtime is between 4 – 7 hours per week with 18 – 25 highest and over 60 lowest, yet is growing
