LEGO Hobbit Sets - An Unexpected Journey (2012-2013)

Updated on October 14, 2014

The New Hobbit Lego Sets Release Dates, Availability, Reviews and Latest News

The LEGO Hobbit sets are a sub theme from the new, yet hugely popular Lego Lord of the Rings sets that first came out in early Summer 2012. Though slated to be released on December 1, 2012, as usual Lego released a bit early, this time 3 days earlier on the November 27, 2012.

From the first I found the idea of a Lego Hobbit set a great idea, and we have not been disappointed, all the hobbit Legos look fantastic, some more then others. Even after seeing the sets more in detail I still find my favorites to be the An Unexpected Gathering Set which is relevant to both Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and the The Goblin King Battle, though I wish we could get all the sets, and I am also really liking the Attack of the Wargs as well now.

And when it comes to minifigures, you will not be disappointed. In addition to Gandalf and the Hobbits, there are also the Dwarves, new monster wolfs (Wargs), Goblin King and Goblins, and more.

Lego the Hobbit are Lego construction sets that look like they are going to be loads of fun to build and play with. And even though they are targeted to children between the ages of 7 and 14, many older teens as well as adults I know are going to be having a great time with them as well.

In addition to the play sets, so far we have a Lego Hobbit's Board Game and rumors of a Lego Hobbit Video game to be released sometime in 2013.

In this lens I will try to keep you up to date with the latest news, release dates and reviews as well as the sets and games we can expect as part of the Lego The Hobbit sets theme.

Read more about the movie schedule on Wikipedia...

LEGO The Hobbit 2013 Summer Sets

As far as any Hobbit Lego sets coming out in the summer of 2013, so far there have not been any announcements, the next Hobbit movie will be at the end of the year, so we will probably seeing some new Hobbit sets at the end of 2013 too.

The Hobbit Lego: An Unexpected Journey Sets

A List of the Sets

The sets are based on the much anticipated movie The Hobbits: An Unexpected Journey a prequel to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and is also directed by Peter Jackson. Of course it also happens to be the beginning of the holiday shopping season, so I suppose they hope to sell a lot of these sets then.

You can find out more about the series on the official Lego Hobbit site.

The sets depict scenes from the first part of the Hobbit story and are a Lego interpretation of some of the main scenes that we will see the adventurers encountering in the coming Hobbit movie.

So far it looks like the first wave will be made up of 6 Lego play sets and a Lego board game. The following are the names in the of the sets in this Sub-series:

The Hobbit Lego Sets

  • Riddles for the Ring - 79000
  • Escape from Mirkwood Spiders - 79001
  • Attack of the Wargs - 79002

The Hobbit Lego Game

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 3920

Riddles for the Ring - 79000

The smallest and most affordable Hobbit set

This set looks like a smaller set, but has some great pieces.

There is the evil Gollum and his perpetual fish, Bilbo, the Ring, Gollum's boat and a cave.

Suggested List Price: $9.99

Escape from Mirkwood Spiders

Lego 79001 Unique elements include spider nets and glow in dark pieces

This set looks like really interesting set, looks like it is going to be really cool.

Looks like we get two spiders to build, some spooky looking trees, webs to catch the Dwarves, a number of skulls, 2 Dwarves (Gloin and Oin) and 2 Elves (Legolas and Tauriel). Finally we have Tauriel, the first female minifig in this series.

Also comes with some nice weapons (swords and bows and arrows) for each minifig, some small spiders and mushrooms at the base of the trees.

Suggested List Price: $29.99

Attack of the Wargs - Lego 79002

Nice set on sale with some exclusive unique pieces

Cool set here comes with 2 evil looking rideable Wargs (those wolf looking creatures), a goblin (seen here riding the white Warg), a large Lego tree with what looks like multi-colored flames, again at least one skull and bone, what looks like some launch type weapon, and some other contraption, two Orcs and 2 Dwarves (I think the one in the tree is Bifur, maybe the other is Thorin)

Suggested List Price: $49.99

An Unexpected Gathering Set - Lego 79003

Bag End - Bilbo's Hobbit hole

LEGO Hobbit: An Unexpected Gathering
LEGO Hobbit: An Unexpected Gathering

The front view of Bilbo's Hobbit Hole with Bilbo, Gandalf and the Dwarfs

This is first of the new Lego Hobbit sets to be unveiled. It looks like an incredible set, I think Lego has done a great job with Bilbo's hobbit-hole, looks like this set has a lot of play in it.

Suggested Price: $69.99

Barrel Escape - Lego 79004

Where the Hobbit Escape in the Barrels

A set that looks like a good build with some great play features, like the barrels coming down an incline, doors, a tap for the brew. Lots of small Lego pieces, such a goblets, bottles, weaponry (swords, axes, etc) , barrels of course. Seems to include Bilbo, 2 Elves and 2 Dwarves(Oin and Gloin).

Suggested List Price: $39.99

For this one the best price is definitely from Lego's own site

The Goblin King Battle - Lego 79010

The largest Hobbit Lego set

LEGO The Hobbit 79010: The Goblin King Battle

Looks like this is going to be the centerpiece of the Hobbits theme sets. It is a massive grim, yet detailed set that looks just as one would imagine the Goblin king's throne room should look like.

Includes a giant throne made of mismatched pieces, perilous walkways, secret crevices, plenty of skulls and bones everywhere, left over food all around, goblets, torches and more. An incredible 8 minifigs: there is the giant Goblin king, 3 Goblins, Gandalf the Grey, 3 Dwarves (Ori, Nori and Dori)

Suggested List Price: $99.99

LEGO Lord of the Rings (Nintendo Wii)CHECK PRICE

So far we only have some not very substantial speculation and rumors of the release of a The Hobbit Lego Wii game or The Hobbit Lego video game sometime in 2013.

The Lego Lord of the rings (LOTR) video game has been a great hit, so adding a video game to the Lego The Hobbit sets seem's like something that should happen. Also so far Lego has released a Lego video game for most of its successful themes, and Lego Hobbit is proving very successful.

Lego Hobbit Web Games Online - FREE to Play - Based on some of the physical Lego Hobbit sets

So far there are three Lego hobbit you can play for free from the Lego site. Two are based on two of the play sets, while the third is online version of Lego The Hobbit board game.

  1. Lego Hobbit - An Unexpected Gathering - Web Game: Bilbo needs to feed all his very demanding uninvited Dwarf guests. The aim of the game is to feed the guests until they are satisfied, by putting the food they demand in their plates. When they are all satisfied, the Dwarves play music, you get to create the music by placing the instruments to be played on the score area. Feeding the guests can get quite frustrating, gives a good idea what Bilbo must have felt when these guest invaded his home in Bag end.
  2. Lego Hobbit - The Halls of The Goblin King - Web Game: Gandalf needs to find the key and then free all the Dwarves captured by the goblins, find the map and escape from the Goblin King's den, avoid all the traps and more - quite fun.
  3. Lego Hobbit - An Unexpected Gathering - Web Game version of the board game: Try this online web version of the board game, surprisingly challenging.

From what I have been able to see, most of these set look really cool, especially the bigger sets, lots interesting sets and some intriguing new Lego pieces that are sure to have fans waiting for in anticipation.

Some things I noticed: I like what I can make out of the play features on most of these sets, Lego seems to have focused some attention on this. On an aside there seem to be recurring skulls, bones and mushrooms as parts of many of the sets.
