Review of Hot Wheels Car Maker Playset

Updated on September 8, 2014

Santa got me the Hot Wheels Car Maker Playset as a toy to share with my seven year old daughter. This set includes the car maker, two molds, several wax sticks, three car chassis and a sheet of stickers.

The carmaker plugs into the wall so adult supervision is required. Once plugged into the wall, the Hot Wheels Car Maker has an electronic voice to walk you through the process and cool sound effects for each process. First an electronic voice tells you to insert the color wax stick and car mold then you are instructed to wait while it is heating up the wax stick. Meanwhile cool sound effects and lights are emitted from the car maker. Then the electronic voice tells you to pull down the handle, this injects the hot wax into the car shell mold. Then you are instructed to wait during the cool down process while the hot wax cools in the mold, once again you are greeted by cool sounds and lights. Finally the front door opens, and the electronic voice instructs you to remove the mold. You use a special tool that is included to remove the car shell from mold. Once the car shell is removed you can place it on one of three car chassis the decorate with the included stickers.

The instructions that came with the car maker claim that the sticks you melt in the mold are wax but when dry it has the toughness of plastic. The completed car shells should survive the wear and tear of normal child play. The wax melting process is completely odorless. I went through the car shell making process once with my seven year old daughter, after that she was able to do the process by herself (with supervision). The Hot Wheels Car Maker Playset specifies that it is for kids eight years or older.

The only downsides of the Hot Wheel Maker Playset are:

  1. The waiting periods during the car making process, be prepared to have another activity ready to do with your child while waiting.
  2. The playset only comes with three car chassis, however, you can reuse the chassis and attach them to new car shells.

On a high note, the wax refill sticks are relatively inexpensive.

All in all, this was a great present and it has provided my daughter and I many hours of fun created new and unique colored car shells.
