Ayurvedic treatment for mental tension

Updated on July 2, 2011

Mental tension as such is considered as an independent pathology in today’s world of stress and depression; however, many illnesses can be related with mental tension and Ayurveda has great options in terms of medicines, lifestyle, and spiritualism to overcome this disorder. There are many Ayurvedic physicians who just specialize in this form of treatment combining panchakarma, herbs, and other attributes to treat it. Also, herbs like Shankhpushpi, Gorakhmundi, Tagara, Jatamansi, and Gokarn herb can help a great deal to treat mental tension. In Ayurveda, it is highly recommended to take medication under supervision with respect to such disorders. In times of mental tension, some people encounter situations like total confusion and loss of interest in everything which make this disorder very critical and this is the reason why this condition must be treated under proper guidance and supervision. Counseling and exposing the patient to different walks of life so that he/she can draw inspiration and overcome his/her fears is very important. We all are born with a special talent and skill but due to nature of life lot of us end up doing things, we wouldn’t do as first choice. It would be really great if we all could just pursue our hobby and get paid for it. But it doesn’t happen.

Mental tension and depression besides on job front could be in a relationship, family matters, etc. This can happen if we expect too much from everybody or try to make everyone happy. In these types of situations, best natural treatment for mental tension is start having a positive outlook towards life.

Ayurvedic medicine for mental tension, three ways:

  1. Panchakarma - Shirodhara, i.e., application of medicated oil/buttermilk on scalp and other forms which must be done by an expert doctor.
  2. Mix equal quantities of Jatamansi 15g, Brahmi 20g, Shankhpushpi 20g, Bhringraja 10gm and Vacha 5gms, Ashwagandha 10g, Shatwari 10g, Gokshura 10g, Vidarikand herb 10g, Kawanch 10g, and Mulethi 10g. Take 1 teaspoon of this mixture with honey twice a day for 2 to 3 months and follow with a cup of warm cow’s milk.
  3. Mental tension can also be treated with Avipattikar churna and Bhunimbadi kashaya initially. After that, proper Dhi Dhairya Atma Nivedanam needs to be delivered to the patient.
  4. Also, mental tension can be treated as vikruti in sadhaka pitta, just give the patient swarna mukta sutshekhar in between meals and swarnaucta brahmi vati before sleep along with mental support..

Least but not last, above medicines and their dosages are only for information purposes and evaluation of patient comes first and remedies later, so if you are a patient suffering from this problem, you need to consult a reputed Ayurvedic medicine physician in your area before initiating treatment, as this problem comes in a broad spectrum of symptoms and severity and your doctor knows what to give according to symptoms and severity of your condition.

You need to come out of this tension and start thinking positive about life, start socializing and do what you like the most. I love traveling and I do it when my mind is full with tensions. Best of luck to come out of tensions.

Ayurveda is the Indian traditional form of medicine and treatment. It is not only a system to cure diseases but the system teaches us how to achieve ‘Perfect Health’ for diseased conditions and how to lead our life, both physical and mental, to attain the bliss of real life. Ayurveda has a separate branch called ‘Rasayana chikitsa’ or ‘Rejuvenation therapy’ to maintain youth and vitality to recover lost health in diseased conditions.

Thanks for the information, I'm always a fan of 'non medical', but of Ayurveda, remedies. Regards Dale
