Using Honey to Reduce Scarring
Anytime you have a wound, it is going to take time to heal. A natural part of the healing process is scarring. “Scars are areas of fibrous tissue (fibrosis) that replace normal skin after injury. A scar results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body” (Wikipedia). While they are ugly reminders of our wounds, scars play a role in protecting that area from further injuries and protect the injured area from infections. Therefore, the larger the wound and the longer amount of time the wound takes to heal, the larger and more noticeable the scar will be.
While there are many ways-including laser surgery and dermabrasion-to make scars less noticeable and to remove them, it is best to keep the scar from appearing. Once you have a scar on your skin, it may take years for it to go away. Sometimes you may have a scar for life. Honey comes in handy in preventing the scar from forming.
As already seen, honey has many medicinal properties. Its soothing and healing abilities are also excellent for the skin. The healing of cuts, abrasions and wounds are sped up when you use honey to treat them with honey. Honey acts just like scar tissue by keeping bacteria, fungus and other foreign matter from entering the wound. In most cases, your body acts as if a dressing of honey is the scar tissue. Therefore, scar tissue may not form or, if it does form, it may not be as noticeable as a scar when you did not use a honey dressing.
Before you apply any dressing, make sure the area is cleaned with an antiseptic cleanser. While hydrogen peroxide is the most commonly used, you can use any type of cleanser. Apply the honey to a bandage or gauze pad-make sure the pad is large enough to cover the wound. Apply the bandage or pad to the wound.
Using Honey to Remove Moles
“Many people refer to a mole as any dark spot or irregularity in the skin” (emedicine health). While some people are born with moles, other people get moles later on in life. While a mole is often times called a beauty mark, some people do not think so, especially if a mole is on an area of skin-such as your face-that attracts attention to other people.
There are several medical procedures to remove moles. Excision is used to cut away the mole and cauterization where the mole is burned away. Not only are these methods expensive, they can also leave scars where the moles were.
A less expensive alternative is using honey to remove the moles. Since honey is known to reduce scarring, you will have lower chances of having scarring by using honey to remove moles compared to the more expensive surgical methods. Not only that, you will experience little or no pain after removing your moles with honey.
If you are using honey to remove your moles, make sure you use undiluted honey. Also make sure it is room temperature.
Clean the mole and the surrounding area of your skin with water and anti-bacterial soap. Using a Q-Tip, cotton ball or clean fingers, apply honey to the mole. Cover with a gauze pad or bandage. Do this every day. After a week, you will notice that the mole will start getting lighter in color. Keep doing this until the mole is gone. It all depends on how dark the mole is and how big it is. Some moles may take a week or two, while others may take longer.
If you suspect that a mole is something more than a birthmark or a blemish, talk to your doctor. He can tell you if it is harmless or if is something to be concerned about, such as melanoma.
