Chakra Clearing & Balancing
An Overview and Guided Meditation
Yogic science recognizes that spiritual health is activated by a system of energy centers known as chakras which are located along the spine from the crown of the head to the tailbone. Although these energy centers are not tangible, they govern all elements of the body. Chakras are affected by thoughts and feelings and determine the state of the mind and body.
Your thoughts control the energy flow within and around you, and your chakras are influenced by your thinking habits. Most thoughts are concentrated on money, spirituality, relationships, goals, and survival “issues”, and you have a chakra for each of these areas. When you worry or obsess over any one or more areas of life, your chakras become dirty and unbalanced and you may experience obstacles in your life or you will feel lifeless and lethargic. When your thoughts are positive, loving, and based on faith, your chakras are balanced and your life will be in a state of natural harmony.
Although there are hundreds of chakras within and around you, there are seven major chakras commonly focused on. The chakras are like wheels of energy spinning within you and each one is related to a particular facet of your life. Each chakra has several attributes associated with it such as a color, sound, affirmation and crystal that can be focused on and used to keep the chakra healthy. The clearing and balancing method described below focuses on colors and affirmations.
Clearing and balancing your chakras on a consistent basis will help lead to a happy, balanced life. The chakras located in the upper part of your body correspond to spiritual issues and the chakras in the lower part of your body correspond to material matters. The lower chakras spin slower than the upper chakras.
For the chakra clearing and balancing to be more effective, it will help to understand the role that each of the seven major chakras play. The overview of these chakras will also help you tailor the affirmations you will concentrate on.
Seven Major Chakras
Root Chakra
The Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine in the perineum and draws energy from the earth. It is linked to survival and material matters. It holds our attitudes and prejudices formed by society, our family and church. The Root Chakra is affected by aggression. If you or your beliefs are threatened, you become angry and defensive. When the Root Chakra is healthy, we affirm that life is good and free from threat, and we have all that we need to survive and feel protected. The color of the Root Chakra is red.
Sacral Chakra
The Sacral Chakra is the second energy center and is located in the pelvis near the sacrum. It is concerned with our physical well being. The energy associated with this chakra promotes our ability to enjoy a deserving life. It governs our sense of well being and our ability to create a sense of abundance. It controls our ability to move forward in life. This chakra holds the impressions we have on our sexuality and feelings of pleasure. When the Sacral Chakra is healthy, we feel deserving of the good things around us. The color of the Sacral Chakra is orange.
Solar Plexus Chakra
The third chakra is the Solar Plexus Chakra and it is located under the diaphragm. This energy center is related to our sense of self value, the quality of our relationships, our confidence, freedom of choice, and passion. An unhealthy Solar Plexus Chakra results in limitations with our financial stability, education and achieving independence. When this chakra is balanced, we have a strong and healthy sense of ourselves and will not adhere to perceived limitations. The color of the Solar Plexus Chakra is yellow.
Heart Chakra
The Heart Chakra is located in the chest and is the center of the energy system. It moves love through us and around our lives. A healthy Heart Chakra will allow us to forgive, love unconditionally, and have compassion. When this chakra is not balanced we have fears about giving and receiving love. The color of the Heart Chakra is green.
Throat Chakra
The fifth major chakra is the Throat Chakra. It is the energy center in and around the throat, neck and mouth area. This chakra is often times blocked with suppressed feelings about our emotions or ideas. It will become unbalanced when we gossip, lie, or rely on others to give us freedom to express our feelings. When this chakra is healthy, we will stand up for our beliefs, and our creativity and self expression is allowed to flow freely. The color of the Throat Chakra is light blue.
Third Eye Chakra
The Third Eye Chakra is also referred to as the Brow Chakra. It is located between the eye brows. It is the center of our innate intelligence and is affected by our past, what we think, feel and do. The Third Eye Chakra seeks meaning and truth. When this chakra is cleared, we have profound awareness and intuition. The color of the Third Eye Chakra is indigo blue.
Crown Chakra
The seventh major chakra is the Crown Chakra which is located on the inside of the top of the head. It is affected by our thoughts on life and is linked to our divine consciousness. It governs our feelings of happiness, and peacefulness. Arrogance, anxiety, and bad attitudes negatively affect this chakra. When we base our thoughts and actions on love, gratitude, and faith, we create a richer, more meaningful life. When this chakra is balanced and healthy, we feel connected with the universe, have sense of a higher purpose, and know that we are loved and guided. The color of the Crown Chakra is royal purple.
Meditating on Colors and Positive Affirmations
You can focus on one chakra if you need particular help in that area, but it is always best to balance all the major chakras in one meditative session. This will ensure a harmonious result including each area of your life.
The chakra clearing and balancing method I describe is one that I use on a consistent basis. It is easy to do, can be done within 15-20 minutes, and can be individually tailored to your needs. It will leave you feeling balanced and spiritually connected to the universe. Read through the meditation once or twice before you begin. It does not have to be memorized word for word. You just need to have a clear positive intent and it will work. You can also record the words and play them back if you’d like.
It is best to meditate on a slightly empty stomach, but not so empty that you will be interrupted by hunger pangs. You want to feel as comfortable as possible.
Method for Clearing and Balancing your Chakras
Sit in a comfortable crossed leg position with your spine straight and shoulders relaxed. The back of your hands can rest on your knees with your fingers relaxed and slightly raised towards the ceiling. If you wish, you can make a circle with your thumb and index fingers. Or you can have your hands resting comfortably in your lap with the back of one hand resting in the palm of the other.
Hint: If you struggle with seeing colors in your mind, picture a roll of Life Saver candies. It has all the colors of the chakra except for the blues and purple. You can also record your own voice while reading the following meditation steps below, and then play it back to yourself.
Gently close your eyes and take three or more slow deep breaths to calm your mind. Keep your eyes closed and return your breath to normal. Not shallow, but not too deep.
Focus on the Root Chakra at base of your spine. Picture a slowly spinning circle the color of red (conjure up an image of the red Life Saver candy if you need help seeing the color) slowly circling clockwise around the base of your spine. The color is a deep shiny ruby red, and is clear and free from blemishes. It circles you freely. The color starts inside you at the base of your spine and expands just outside your hip area. While focusing on the red circling light wave, think the words “I accept myself as I am”. “I have all that I need to survive”. “I am grounded”. Still focusing on the circle of ruby red color, take 2 deep breaths and…
Focus on the Sacral Chakra right above the Root Chakra and a few inches below the stomach area. Picture a clockwise spinning circle the color of orange around this area. The orange is beautifully bright and radiant, and is free from blemishes. It circles you slowly and freely and spins above the circling red of the Root Chakra. The orange light wave extends out from your spine, stopping where the color red ends. While focusing on the orange circling light wave, think the words “I allow abundance into my life”. “All my physical needs and desires are met”. “I am comfortable in my body”. Still focusing on the beautiful orange color, take 2 deep breaths and…
Focus on the Solar Plexus Chakra in the stomach area right above the Sacral Chakra. Picture a slowly spinning circle the color of yellow circling around this area. The yellow is clear and free from blemishes and is bright and radiant like a ray of sunshine. It circles you freely and is right above the circling orange of the Sacral Chakra. The light wave circles out from your spine in your stomach area, stopping where the colors orange and red ends. While focusing on the yellow circling light wave, think the words “I am worthy of a good life”. “I deserve the best and I accept the best now”. Still focusing on the sunshiny yellow color, take 2 deep breaths and…
Focus on the Heart Chakra in the chest area. Picture a spinning circle the color of emerald green circling around this area. It is spinning slightly faster than the lower chakras. The green is clear and free from blemishes and is brilliant in color like a sparkling emerald jewel. It circles you freely and is right above the circling yellow of the Solar Plexus Chakra. The light wave circles out from your spine in your chest area, stopping where the colors yellow, orange and red ends. While focusing on the green circling light wave, think the words “I am love”. “I love myself”. “I give and receive love freely”. Still focusing on the emerald green color, take 2 deep breaths and…
Focus on the Throat Chakra in the area of the neck. Picture a spinning circle the color of light blue circling around this area. The light blue color is clear and free from blemishes. Imagine the blue as a clear, sunshiny, sky blue day. It circles your neck area freely at a moderate speed. The light wave circles out from the inside of the throat, stopping where the color green, yellow, orange and red ends. While focusing on the light blue circling light wave, think the words “I speak my truth”. “I express myself as honestly as I can”. “I share my feelings with ease and comfort”. Still focusing on the circle of clear light blue color, take 2 deep breaths and…
Focus on the Third Eye Chakra in the middle of your eyebrows, between your eyes. Picture a spinning circle the color of dark blue circling around this area. The dark blue color is clear and free from blemishes. It is radiant and sparkling, and circles around the brow area freely and about the same speed as the throat chakra. The light wave circles out from between the eyes, stopping where the colors light blue, green, yellow, orange and red ends. While focusing on the dark blue circling light wave, think the words “I use my wisdom and intelligence to move forward”. “All I need to know has been presented to me”. Still focusing on the radiant dark blue color, take 2 deep breaths and…
Focus on the Crown Chakra inside the top of your head. Picture a spinning circle the color of royal purple circling around this area. The royal purple color is sparkling, and clear of blemishes. It circles around the top of your head freely and slightly faster than the Third Eye Chakra. The light wave circles out from the inside top of your head, stopping where the colors dark blue, light blue, green, yellow, orange and red ends. While focusing on the royal purple circling light wave, think the words “The divine guides me on the path of life”. “I release all fear and doubt and know that my life is blessed.” Still focusing on the sparkling royal purple color, take 2 deep breaths and…
Picture a radiant, healing, white light extend out from the crown of your head, flowing down, around, and through all the colors of your chakras. See this radiant white light being absorbed by all the colors as it dances around and becomes one with each chakra. As this healing white light permeates each chakra, feel the warmth and love of it. Know that you are whole, complete and loved. When you are ready, see the white light flow back into your body through the crown of your head, and picture each of your chakras slowing down, but not quite stopping. With your eyes still closed, take two deep breaths and allow yourself to enjoy the energized but peaceful sensations. Gently open your eyes when you are ready.
