Diet Plans for Men - Dr Briffa's Waist Disposal: The Ultimate Fat Loss Manual for Men

Updated on April 8, 2011

This hub is dedicated to my friend Art who asked for a hub to “Banish a Belly” and Waist Disposal - the Ultimate Fat Loss Manual for Men was the nearest I could get!

Waist Disposal - the Ultimate Fat Loss Manual for Men is the seventh book to be published by Dr John Briffa. Briffa believes his latest book delivers men with the comprehensive information they need to lose weight and keep it off in easy to follow practical steps. He explains that ” all you need to transform your body for the better is to follow some simple dietary guidelines that have nothing to do with calorie counting or portion control (so no hunger), and exercise for just 12 minutes a day.”

Briffa was a prize winning student at University College London Medical School where he gained his medical degree and since qualifying as a doctor he has specialized in the areas of nutrition and complementary natural medicine. Not only is he an author and a practicing doctor he is also journalist, lecturer and broadcaster.

As the title infers this book is aimed at helping men lose weight and this area of the weight loss market is far from being saturated. as there are many men who are wanting to lose their spare tire around their middle for the sake of their appearance and their health.

Unfortunately fat around the belly usually means that there is also visceral fat, surrounding your internal organs which can cause chronic illness. This means that you might be damaging your health if you are carrying some additional weight around your midriff but are still what would be considered to be a healthy weight as you could have deposits of visceral fat.

Dr John Biffa on "Waist Disposal"

In this book Briffa pours scorn on the traditional weight loss regime of restricting calories and exercising more as he believes

  • It is unsustainable as it leaves you feeling hungry
  • Counting calories often results in a diet high in carbohydrates and low in fat
  • Carbohydrate causes our bodies to produce insulin, a hormone which is responsible for creating fat deposits
  • Eating less can cause your metabolism to slow down
  • The amounts of calories burned by exercise are relatively small
  • People who exercise more tend to eat more

He claims that the information and advice he provides in the book is based on both his own clinical experience and hundreds of scientific studies. He also considers that as a species our bodies have evolved and are best equipped to deal with types of foods that we have eaten for the longest period of time in our history. This means that we are best adapted to cope with “hunter gatherer” foods such as meat, fish, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables but not grains such as wheat and corn or highly processed foods. Briffa calls this ‘The Primal Principle”.

Men are prone to accumulate any excess weight around their waist which is why Briffa has chosen “Waist Disposal for part of the title of his book. He has also chosen to call this excess weight “Toxic Waist” because of the links of excess abdominal fat to conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

He also states the strategies in his book can produce rapid results and considerable progress within a few weeks for men. He looks to change the composition of the body by reducing fat but increasing muscle so it is possible to make large improvements without very much weight loss having taken place.

Briffa contends that some food types are more likely to form fat in the body than other so this is why counting calories does not work. The book advises which foods are least likely to form fat in your body as well as advising which foods are best to satisfy our appetites for the longest period of time. He provides details of the types of foods to eat with recipes for quick and easy to prepare.

Briffa believes that our thoughts and beliefs are also key to delivering successful dietary change and successful weight loss, and he dedicates the whole of the final chapter of his book to providing the information to maintain the necessary motivation
