Does Exercising on a Rebounder Increase Bone Density?

Updated on November 2, 2010

Rebounder Increase Bone Density

There is little doubt that engaging in regular exercise is a factor in ensuring not only a longevity but also quality of life. But not all exercises have the same effect on the body or on the same part of the body. Many people have often focused on building muscle mass and relaxing in the thought that this alone is enough to ensure one's fitness. However, building muscle mass does not automatically translate to stronger bones. Lifting barbells and dumbbells can increase the amount of muscle that one has but according to many research findings, not all such exercises are beneficial to our bones.

In fact, many of the most common exercises that people engage in have minimal positive effect on the bones. For instance, swimming, while a great way of keeping fit, hardly adds any value to the bones. Cycling is another great way of keeping fit but excessive cycling actually results in bone fragility. Even weight lifting does not strengthen the bones accordingly. Also rigorously engaging into these exercises could end up reducing bone density.

One form of exercise that has been proven time and again as effective in strengthening the bones is rebounding. But talk of rebounding does not always go well with everyone as some do not consider it a ‘grown up' exercise given that rebounding and trampolines are more associated with children and teenagers than with adults.

However, if one is going to start making their way toward stronger bones, jumping on a rebounder everyday for about 20 minutes is one of the best ways to do so.

During rebounding, the motion and pressure on the bones causes a slight bend of the bones which overtime increases the bones' density. The upward and downward movement increases the gravitational force that is exerted on the body cells leading to not only better bones but better muscles too.

Strong bones and powerful muscles are not of themselves adequate in ensuring a healthy lifestyle. Balance and stability are just as important. This is another front where rebounding trumps many other forms of exercise as it helps one attain good balance overall and thus minimizes the risk of injury from accidental falls.

If you want to burn calories, then rebounding does that too. The jumping up and down may seem easy because of the energy conserved by the elastic base of the trampoline that helps to propel you back upwards after each jump. But rebounding consumes a significant amount of energy and you can quickly lose weight if you incorporate rebounding in your regular exercise routine. It slows down the aging process, reduces the level of fatigue and minimizes the occurrence of body aches and pains. The stronger bones and better health and fitness levels overall are a powerful confidence booster as you start to feel more in control of your body.

Starting rebounding does not take much as all you need is a rebounder that is easy to carry and that can allow you to exercise in whichever place that is convenient for you. It will not take long before you start to see the tangible benefits that rebounding has to offer.
