You Are What You Eat

You need essential health supplements to maintain good health. Ask any dietician, and you will be told that you are what you eat. Ask any fashion designer, and you will be told that you are what you wear. Ask any spiritual teacher, and you will be told that you are what you think. Each has valid points, depending on what you are looking for. If you want to appear good, then you need to listen to the fashion designer. If you want peace of mind, then you better heed the advice of the spiritual teacher. Before you can achieve your desires, the most important consideration for anyone is the maintenance of good health. So I will first take the advice of the dietician. We are what we eat. We need essential health supplements to help maintain good health.

Essential To Maintain Good Overall Health

To maintain a healthy body requires much effort and discipline. Some people are exceptionally lucky that they are always healthy, no matter what they do or eat, or even not doing anything. They are naturally healthy. It's in their genes. If you are one of these very fortunate healthy people, congratulations. As for the rest of us, we need to make that extra effort to ensure we maintain our good health. I have written many times in my other articles on health and well-being, that there are four pillars that support our well-being and good health. They are :

1. Essential nutrition.

2. Regular exercise.

3. Mental relaxation.

4. Active and positive family and social interactions.

My health record is average. However, I find that I do not have much stamina even when I was a young man. I get tired very easily. Apart from that, I have not much complaint on my health. In fact, I am thankful that I am still healthy and alive. I am now 64, this year, 2014. I attribute my ability to maintain a reasonable good health, to my effort and discipline in taking good care of my body. I have shared my personal health experiences in many articles which I wrote over the years. You can find one link at the end of this article.

Three Essential Health Supplements

For the sake of my health, I am a very disciplined person. I tried my best to maintain the "four pillars of health" which I referred above. This article is just part of a quarter of my health regime. It is the first pillar of healthy living, which involves healthy eating. If we do not eat the proper food, nothing matters. So we need to start with providing the proper nutrition for our body. Only when the body is fit, are we able to extend to the other three pillars of health. I am not a health freak. I eat moderately, and I eat almost anything. But I try to minimize consuming foods that are processed and with additives and preservatives. I consume the more nutritious stuff like fresh vegetables, fresh fruits and juices, and nuts and beans.

In addition to the healthy foods, my belief is that we need some essential health supplements to enhance our body immune system. About health supplements, be careful not to overindulge in them as they are mostly expensive commodities. There are so many "health" supplements that claim to "help or alleviate" virtually every health problem that you may have. Let us be wise not to be hook-winked by their exaggerated marketing techniques. Be that as it may, after many years of experience, living through the rough patches of my life, I am convinced that taking some essential health supplements everyday helps keep me fit and healthy. I am convinced that these essential health supplements effectively boost my body immune system to fight off harmful bacteria and the countless myriads of viruses and germs that enter and attack my body continuously throughout each day and night.

Here I like to share the three essential health supplements, any of which I take everyday. I must admit that most days I don't take all these three supplements together, but I do take at least one of them everyday. These three health supplements are very common and I am sure most people know about them. One reminder is that we must buy only the trusted brands.

Spirulina : Spirulina is nature's rich source of nutrition. Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae naturally bio-chelated for excellent assimilation of all the nutrients into the body system. It is rich in protein, vitamins B12 and E, carotenoids, chlorophyll, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, phytonutrients and minerals. Everyone in the family from children to adults and the elderlies can take spirulina, As spirulina is an algae, it can be contaminated with toxic substances called microcystins and can also absorb heavy metals from the water where it is cultivated. So make sure you buy only from the trusted brands.

It is recommended that we take powdered spirulina rather than the tablet form, because the tablet form contains binders or fillers and is more difficult to digest.

Fish Oil : Fish oil is derived from the tissues of oily fish. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids which are called EPA and DHA. Cold water oily fishes have the most content of omega-3 EPA and DHA, especially herrings, sardines, mackerels, salmons and cod liver.

Studies show that omega-3 can lower blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Omega-3 fatty acids can also aid reduce depression and reduce risk of dementia. Latest studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids protect against age-related eye disorders. EPA and DHA work together, but each has its unique benefits. EPA reduces inflammation, improves cardiovascular and circulatory health, and is beneficial for autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. DHA is important for the brain, cognition, nerve and eye cells where it has its highest concentration within the eye tissue.

Our body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids, so we need to obtain them from external sources through our diet. By the way, non-fish based foods like flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts and soybeans also have large amount of omega-3. The recommended dosage per day is 1000mg omega-3 consisting of 600mg EPA and 400mg DHA.

Multi-vitamins : This needs no introduction or further explanation. I am sure everyone has taken multi-vitamins tablets. Do make sure that you buy from reputable manufacturers. Vitamins are just vitamins. So there cannot be any difference. Only the potency differs. Although we can make sure we eat proper food, there is no guarantee that we have sufficient vitamins and essential minerals to keep us healthy. I always make sure I buy multi-vitamins with the essential minerals; and of course I only buy the reputable brands. To me, multi-vitamins with essential minerals are an additional "insurance" for maintaining my good health.

Chlorella, My Latest Addition

Recently, I have added chlorella to my list of health supplement. Chlorella is the green algae which has the special "chlorella growth factor" (CGF). CGF is a remarkable combination of nucleic acids (RNA & DNA) and peptides that provide cell-protective effect. CGF promotes health by accelerating cell growth and repairing aging cells. With regular intake of chlorella, there will be an increase of energy level and body defense system. Chlorella also contains chlorophyll, fiber, and high dosage of B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, carotenoids and essential minerals.

We Need A Proper Health Regime To Maintain Good Health

Coming back the the Four Pillars Of Health:
1. Essential nutrition.

2. Regular exercise.

3. Mental relaxation.

4. Active and positive family and social interactions.

If you want to ensure good health throughout your life, it is pertinent that you take the above Four Pillars Of Health very seriously. If you are over 60 years of age, please do take proper care of your health. For this, you need an effective health regime and you need self-discipline and great effort. I have written many articles on how I manage my health regime. As they say, "I walk the talk". If you are interested to pursue the topic further, you are welcome to start with my article called "How To Stay Healthy For People Over 50"

Occasionally, I do take other health supplements, especially vitamin C if I am not feeling that well. The other health supplement is sea buckthorn. In addition to these health supplements, I also regularly take the following natural health enhancers, namely, psyllium husks, moringa leaves, and luo han guo.
