Ayurveda Massage

Have you ever noticed how the boxers at any boxing match show up in the ring? They are always all dripping in sweat already even before the match starts. They've been revving up in the gym – warming their finely tuned bodies with a kind of exercise routine that would completely exhaust a lesser mortal. But there are some of us who feel that revving up for a demanding week ahead shouldn't involve whipping yourself into form. Some of us feel that it should be somewhat more civilized than what you have to do to have your brains beaten out in the boxing ring. If you're looking for an alternative, that's what Ayurveda massage offers you.

Oddly enough, when you step in for a session of Abhyanga, the Ayurveda massage technique that uses medicated oils, what you experience feels nothing like revving up. It feels like total luxury. And yet, at the end of that, you'll find that the five millennium-old massage technique that has been applied to your body has somehow detoxified your system, destressed you and somehow pumped you full of energy to take anything on.

Certainly, no one's ever going to be able to afford that kind of luxury spa treatment every day. But you can at least go halfway by giving yourself aan Ayurveda massage with medicated oils right at home today. You can do most of the important things that a professionally trained Ayurveda masseur can give you.

The right way to do it would be to wake up a little ahead of time in the morning and to use an Ayurvedic medicated oil to give yourself a massage, to let the oil soak in for a few minutes, and then to go get your shower (don't leave the floor of the shower all slick and slippery with oil afterwards).

There are a number of medicated natural oils you can use for your massage. Sesame oil is one is celebrated Ayurvedic oils. Once you buy the oil at any southern Indian grocery store, you just need to cure it by heating it to 212°F and letting it cool. It's good to store now. Or else, if you are prepared to pay a little more, you could go directly to an Ayurvedic supplies store and they'll sell it to you all ready to go.

To do the actual massage, warm some oil up and apply it with light strokes all over your body. Wait for a few minutes to let the oil soak in, and then use your entire palm to massage your entire body. Use circular motions and straight motions wherever it seems right, and you'll have it over with in about 15 min. That's all you need to do.
