Nutrition is a fast advancing science. In times past, nutrition didn't receive the attention it now enjoys, either from the scientific community or the general public. With more and more scientific research into the area of foods related to general health and well-being, consumers are able to reap the benefits of knowledge.
We all know if you put diesel fuel in a vehicle that takes unleaded gasoline, that vehicle isn't going to run for long. The same is true with our bodies, only they are much more complex than any vehicle engine could ever hope to be.
Nutrition doesn't have to be a dry and boring subject--quite the opposite is true. It's interesting and exciting to learn the potentials of various foods, to know what provides the nutrients we need to thrive. Nutrition is a lot like chemistry--each food product is examined for its building blocks and how they work with the body.
With science, there is now an identification and initial understanding of the importance of phytonutrients in overall nutrition and health. An understanding not too many decades old was basically about the carbohydrates, proteins and fats in foods has leaped tremendously.
Dietitians are important members of the health care team. Health is more than about medication or surgery. You don't have to be in ill health to consult a dietitian yourself; all you need is a desire to work toward an optimal nutrition goal for yourself.
