The Benefits of Laughter

Updated on January 4, 2013

10 Reasons You Should Laugh More Often

You have probably heard that laughter is good for the soul and even for your health. Well here are 10 excellent reasons you should drop everything and laugh right now!

1. Laughter creates happy feelings:

Laughter releases endorphins which give a happy feeling. Depressed? Sad? Laughter may provide you with a temporary cure.

2. Laughter is attractive:

When you laugh, people are actually drawn to you. You appear happier and healthier.

3. Laughter defuses anger and tension:

Have you ever tried telling a joke in a tense situation? Try it! Laughing eases anger by giving a much needed break. It can also help you shift gears and see a situation with a fresh point of view.

4. Laughter is good for your heart:

Believe it or not, laughter increases your blood flow. This improves the health of your blood vessels, heart and overall cardiovascular system.

5. Laughter relieves stress:

Endorphins are also a natural stress reliever. Taking a break to laugh during your day can lessen the stress of your overall day.

6. Laughter reduces pain:

Laughter reduces pain: Laughing releases natural painkillers in your body. It really IS the best medicine!

7. Laughter strengthens relationships:

Laughing helps create and maintain bonds. Laughing with friends, family, coworkers and spouses insures your relationships will remain positive and enjoyable.

8. Laughter creates lasting memories:

If you think back, many of the memories you hold on to, are funny. Laughing means that you are having a good time and good times mean good memories.

9. Laughter is universal:

In my travels, I have always been surprised and over joyed by the universality of laughter. Driving in a cab in Cairo, Egypt, my driver and I bonded over laughter. We watched the crazy moves of other drivers and simply communicated through our laughter. No matter where you are, funny is funny.

10. Laughter is FREE!:

That’s right. There are still many free things you can do to enjoy your time. So laugh as much as you can as hard as you can TODAY!

Laughter is truly 'the best medicine' on so many levels. You listed them for us here in a clear and concise manner.

The real 'Patch Adams', a doctor whol beleives that laughter and humor work for us should be cloned. In myown life, my grandson, dautghter, and I have learned to laugh so many times in the face of fear that creeps in when illness intrudes in a life.

Thank you, KrystalD, for sharing this so that all may know to laugh.

You sound like you have a really strong and enjoyable relationship with your husband. That is a great method you two have going for managing tense conversations. Inspiring!

Great hub. I agree laughter is so important. Luckily I'm with a man who makes me laugh all the time. We never argue but he came up with a funny idea for when we did have our heated discussions. We would each have to wear a funny hat. Mine is a big red neck trucker hat with a beard and his is butterfly wings flying out of his head. It's hard to have a heated discussion when your husband has butterflies coming from his head. It cracks me up every time. Thanks for sharing. Voted up.

Thanks for stopping by all and commenting! I think everyone knows laughing must be healthy because it simply feels awesome. Let's all vow to keep laughing! I think it comes pretty natural in childhood but in the demanding adult wprld we live in, it can get lost. One thing my dad taught me was to appreciate every opportunity to laugh :)

Nothing beats a good laugh as an ice breaker. I love to unwind at the weekends by staying up late and watching good stand up comics. You are so right when you say that laughter is a great stress reliever.

A fun hub and socially shared.

This is an awesome hub, on an awesome topic! Laughter is so incredibly important. I will never understand those who don't like to laugh (yes, they exist). I grew up laughing A LOT and I was always teased for it (I still am). But really, I feel sorry for those people who don't laugh much. I am so much happier than they are on a daily basis. I don't know if they are unhappy because they don't laugh, or if they don't laugh because they're unhappy. I just think they should start laughing at things! It's nice to know that someone else shares my appreciation for laughing. Thanks so much for sharing this!
