The Benefits of Mega Red Krill Oil
Krill Oil is a powerful supplement to help improve or stabilize your health. The amazing properties of Krill allows us to maintain a healthy brain, heart, liver and cardiovascular health among many others.
Claimed to be more powerful and healthier than other oily fish such as salmon and mackerel or fish oils such as cod liver oil, krill oil has antioxidants which remove free radicals form our bodies.
With a daily intake at a recommended dosage, you should see the benefits over time and feel healthy and fitter than you have felt before?
What are Krill?
Krill (Euphausia superba) are small crustacean, these are shrimp like creatures ranging from between 1-5cm and can be found in cold oceans around the globe but are more prevalent in the North Pacific Oceans and Antarctica.
Krill is a Norwegian word meaning “young fry of fish”.
One species found in the Antarctic are named “Antarctic Krill” and it is estimated they make up a biomass of over 500 million. This is around double that of us humans.
The omega-3 rich fish is important to the oceans food chain; providing food for squid, penguins, whales and seals. The large amount of krill eaten (about half the population) is replaced by reproduction and growth.
The majority caught by humans (around 150-200 thousand tons per year) are used for aquarium feeds, bait for fishing and the pharmaceuticals.
What is Krill Oil?
Krill oil is made from Krill, there are two nutrients which are important for us to consume.
The first nutrient of krill, much like other fish oils we consume contains both omega-3 fats (EPA) eicosapentanoic acid and (DHA) docosahexanoic acid.
The other is Phospholipid-derived fatty acids (PLFA), mainly comprising of phosphatidylcholine (this is also referred to as marine lecithin).
Also, the oily fish contains Astaxanthin which is a natural anti-oxidant.
These will now be discussed in more detail.

What is EPA and DHA?
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is consumed by eating oily fish ( herring, mackerel, salmon etc) or fish oils (cod liver and krill oils). EPA is also found in the human body via breast milk.
EPA is not naturally produced by oily fish, it is through the process of fish consuming algae which makes them rich in the omega-3 fatty acid.
Our bodies naturally convert the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to EPA, but this conversion has much less absorption of EPA than that of oily omega-3 rich foods containing it. So taking foods rich in EPA is well recommended.
Ensuring EPA consumption in humans is also important as it's a precursor to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is primary component of the human brain. This omega-3 fatty acid is also a structural component of the skin, cerebral cortex, sperm, retina and testicles. This can be obtained from breast milk or fish oils.
Krill oils are rich in DHA. Taking DHA may reduce the risk of heart disease, this is done by reducing the level of blood triglycerides in us humans.
Humans who have low or less than what is deemed normal levels of DHA have been associated with Alzheimer's disease.
Benefits of Krill Oil Over Other Oily Fish
Krill oil is more effective to the human body than other sources of Omega 3 rich foods or supplements. Krill also contains Astaxanthin, a powerful anti-oxidant not found in other oily fish. The benefits of taking Krill Oil just for this anti oxidant alone outweighs the benefits of other oily fish.
To look at it another way, you get what other oily fish give, but more.
There are no toxins or pollutants (such as mercury) in Krill, these can accumulate in fish. The slightly unpleasant taste from taking other fish oils is not an issue with krill as it's taste is free from unpleasantness.
Great for helping liver function. The metabolism in your liver of glucose is increased. This is important for the liver function. After eating a meal, excess glucose is taken up but later as the glucose levels decline, the liver can then feed the bloodstream again for transport to other tissues.
The super fish will help lower your cholesterol levels and increase your energy production, this is something that fish oils do not do.
Here is a small list of benefits of Krill Oil:
- Mood stability – antidepressant qualities
- Memory and Cognitive function improvement.
- Easing of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and gout
- Anti-aging properties
The benefits of krill oil outweigh those of fish oils such as cod liver oil. Also on a moral perspective, Krill is more sustainable as a food source than fish such as cod or salmon, this is due to Krill being the largest biomass in the world.
