Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard Review

Updated on February 22, 2014

If you’ve ever been looking for a protein powder, whey in particular, then you’ve probably already come across Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Gold Standard powder.

There’s a good reason why you see this supplement everywhere; it won Supplement of the Year in 2009 and has been awarded Protein Powder of the Year from 2005 to 2009!

So what exactly makes this protein powder such a popular, award-winning supplement?

Proprietary Blend of Whey Proteins

It might be because of how efficient their blend of different types of whey proteins is. If you’ve been keeping up with my other articles then you should already know what whey protein is and the benefits you can attain from it.

Optimum Nutrition combines the following types of whey protein into their mix:

  • Microfiltered Whey Protein Isolates
  • Ion-Exchange Whey Protein Isolates
  • Ultrafiltered Whey Protein Concentrate
  • HydroWhey Hydrolyzed Whey Peptides

Whey protein isolates are the type of whey protein I’d shoot for if I were buying a protein supplement. They’re more refined but still cost effective; they contain less fat, cholesterol and lactose. Microfiltration and Ion-Exchange are two different ways to isolate the whey protein. There have been debates as to which method is better but since they’re both in the mix, why argue?

Whey protein concentrate isn’t as refined as an isolate but it’s a lot cheaper, which may bring down the overall cost of this supplement. It is still filter though, in fact Optimum “Ultrafilters” it!

And they finish off the mix with the “Cadillac of Whey”; hydrolyzed whey peptides. This form of whey is faster acting and more easily absorbed. The combination of these four types of whey protein really sets this protein powder apart from the rest.

You’re going to get 24 grams of protein per serving and the serving size is just barely over an ounce. So you’re looking at a concentration of nearly 79% protein by weight!

More Enhancements!

They don’t stop there though; Optimum Nutrition also adds Aminogen digestive enzymes and lactase. This is going to help you absorb the powder easier and it’ll be gentle on your stomach, for those that are lactose intolerant.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that they also include 4 grams of glutamine and glutamine precursors AND 5 grams of branched-chain amino acids! This makes this much more than your average protein powder. Once again, if you’ve read my past articles you probably already know the benefits of glutamine and the benefits of BCAAs. Let’s just say that you should plan on performing better during your workouts and recovering faster.

This Gold Standard powder is instantized so it’s not going to be hard to mix into your beverage like other protein powders.

Flavors and Sizes

I’m sure that most of you have already tried protein powders in the past that tasted horrible. You probably still choked them down because you didn’t want to waste the money you had spent on the supplement. Don’t worry about that anymore!

There are SO many different flavors to choose from and I promise that this will be one of the best protein powders you’ve tasted.

Here are all the flavors you can choose from:

  • Banana Cream
  • Cake Batter
  • Caramel Toffee Fudge
  • Chocolate Coconut
  • Chocolate Malt
  • Chocolate Mint
  • Coffee
  • Cookies and Cream
  • Delicious Strawberry
  • Double Rich Chocolate
  • Extreme Milk Chocolate
  • French Vanilla Crème
  • Mocha Cappuccino
  • Orange Cream
  • Rocky Road
  • Root Beer Float
  • Strawberry Banana
  • Tropical Punch
  • Vanilla Chai
  • Vanilla Ice Cream

I would be very surprised if you couldn’t find at least one flavor that you liked!

Optimum 100% Whey is actually pretty inexpensive but, as you know, the bigger the container you buy the more you’ll save.

You can get this protein in the following sizes:

  • 16 Flavor Packets
  • 1 Pound
  • 2 Pounds
  • 5 Pounds
  • 10 Pounds

All in all, this is one of the most complete, delicious, inexpensive protein powders you’re going to come across! When you opt for Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard protein powder you won’t be disappointed.

About Optimum Nutrition

Optimum Nutrition was founded way back in 1986 by two brothers; Tony and Michael Costello.

They obviously had great success with this company, but decided to sell it to Glanbia after 22 years of business. Glanbia is an international cheese and nutritional ingredients group.

The company was originally called Costello’s Health Distributors, which is still in operation today as Optimum Nutrition’s sister distribution company. Optimum Nutrition also owns and operates another brand called AmericanBodyBuilding.

These three companies together put out some of the highest quality, GMP Certified supplement products in the market today.

It doesn’t matter what category you’re looking in, Optimum Nutrition can fulfill your needs when it comes to supplements.
