Reduce stress - with humor and laughter

Updated on April 25, 2011

Stress, humor and laughter

Can you imagine a world without humor and life without laughter? I do not even want to think of it, it seems so stress filled, glum and bleak. Humor and laughter perk up every conversation; bring to life every gathering, make every moment livable, they are the quintessential seasoning that makes life palatable. I am not talking about the mad laughter, for the sake of laughter or even the very synthetic kind, produced to reap some health benefits. I am talking about the joie de vivre or the joy of living. I mean, the pure joy of being alive, of facing another moment, of being privileged to breathe in the fresh air, enjoy the simple things of life and just being in the moment. There is no stress in such a life. Stress reduction anyone??

Stress free living - Life filled with laughter, humor and fun

“Humor is mankind's greatest blessing.” - Mark Twain

Yes, it is. The stress and strain of living would not only wear people out, but make them go insane. Laughter and humor are truly mankind’s greatest blessings. Sometimes, people take themselves too seriously to the extent of sticking out like a sore thumb. It is rather difficult to work with a person who cannot take a joke in the course of work, a person who will not smile, or may think it wrong to laugh in a position of responsibility. Such people make life difficult for themselves and those around them, especially those who love to enjoy what they do. They may be the proverbial damp squib.

Managing stress - improving quality of life

The business of living for most people is difficult, so why make it intolerable for yourself and for others with an imbalanced view? Taking yourself too seriously would mean you are focused, you achieve what you want or maybe you even have the perfect house and job. But what is that, when you find no joy in what you do, or people dread you, and avoid your company? You could end up being an emotional and physical wreck.

Increase of stress could result in your health being undermined. Various stress related illnesses like peptic ulcers, anxiety, depression, hypertension all take a toll on the quality of life that you live. Laughter and humor boosts the immune system by increasing immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thereby improving your resistance to diseases.

Try Humor and laughter - Lighten up now!

Laughter does wonderful things for you. It relaxes your body, it lightens up your face, adds a glow to your eyes and brightens up the look. The lines and the droopy look are gone; the monster has disappeared to make way for the human within. The smile is such a wonderful gift, why not use it more often? I believe that only humans can smile. (okay, I know what you are thinking: my dog smiles, my cat smiles or something on those lines. Well I am not a dog or a cat so I don’t know about that!) It is a rather beautiful thing to see a smiling, happy person. It draws you close to them, so why not adopt a cheerful countenance today?

Reduce stress - get back life

Do you love some good champagne? Laughter triggers the same reactions that expensive champagne does. It relaxes your muscles, makes you feel at ease, helps you warm up to the company and sit back and enjoy your time.

You will feel the stress, tension and the anxiety drain out as you laugh and begin to enjoy the company you are in. Well if the company has no sense of humor, then you can be the one that provides it.

Laughter is a great pain reliever, when you laugh, endorphins are released and a sense of well being pervades your whole being causing you to forget your pain or sadness. It might even cause you to feel good about yourself which may result in a spurt of physical activity, even if you are disinclined.

Humor can get you out of sticky situations and help you slip away from those situations that may not be to your advantage. If you are quick witted you can make a boring lecture come to life, a dull speech sparkling and interesting.

Humor can defuse tension and stress in the home environment, in a moment. Laughter cools the rising tempers and temperatures and brings back the balance. Humor is the tool to effectively manage stress and anger.

Laughter brings out spontaneity in you, makes you more human and easy to be with. Laughter triggers off the same reactions that expensive champagne does. It helps you feel less inhibited and express your emotions clearly.

Humor in the workplace

Charlie Chaplin once said, “A day without laughter is wasted”.

Humor at the workplace can improve relationships between peers and colleagues, though there is a place for humor and a time to use it. Excessive or inappropriate use of humor could cause you to get into trouble, especially at work. There is a time and place for everything however good.

Humor is a very delicate tool of communication which has to be used with an understanding of the situation, with sensitivity towards the people around and propriety.

Humor should not be at the cost of someone else’s pride or ego. Sick or inappropriate jokes could tick people off and get you into trouble.

You need to use humor that heals, not humor that hurts; humor that makes people think, not humor that makes people clam up. You really need to test the waters before you use humor excessively.

If humor is acceptable, go ahead and use some more, because this brings about a certain amount of work life balance.

Happy people make great employees and great team members.

Humor can cause a team to be more cohesive and work as a unit.

The phrase ‘comic relief’ says it all - humor is the greatest ‘stress buster there is, at the workplace. If only you could laugh, things would appear much better and life, truly worth the living.

Win friends, influence people and laugh your way to the bank

If you only knew how to use humor, you could not only win friends and influence people, but you could make it easier to find your way through any problems that come up.

Albert Einstein went to the extent of saying “Humor is more important than knowledge”.

Oh you may not really laugh your way to the bank. If you only knew how to use humor, you could not only win friends and influence people, but you could make it easier to find your way through any problem that comes up. If we don’t laugh at the ridiculous nature of things, we would go mad. Somehow, the sound of laughter attracts more people to join you, than the sound of mourning. When you mourn, people stand around and watch the proceedings; very few can actually join in your mourning.

Humor and laughter - the recipe for a happy life

I read this quote by an unknown author and it struck a note in me. It says, “Computers will never replace humans until they learn to laugh.” Many of us are stuck to our computers and our gadgets and seem to forget what it is to be human. “Recipe for a happy life”, says Gerry Hopman, “is loads of laughter, heaps of humor and a general sprinkling of smile; excellent for twosomes or a large gathering.” Humor is indeed the very essence of life, and if you do not have it, you are missing a major tool that you need for living. Go figure! Learn today how to make use of humor in your everyday life and get rid of stress.
