The Unlisted Side Effect of Prescription Drugs -Reduced Nutrients

Updated on September 6, 2012

Pharmaceutical Drugs Deplete Nutrients

Americans are using more legal drugs than ever - both prescription and OTC (over the counter). What hasn't been revealed about this heavy drug use is that many of these drugs are wiping out the most vital nutrients in our body.

How many prescription medications are used?

More than half of all Americans are taking prescription medications. This means more than 150 million people use these synthetic drugs according to a recent article in the Energy Times. Further, with more than 960 million visits to a doctor's office each year, 70 percent of those visits include the doctor writing a prescription.

Surely, all side effects are listed?

There is no doubt that Americans are heavy users of prescription drugs despite side effects that often lead to an impaired quality of life and even death. While side effects are supposed to be listed on all drugs now, one more serious side effect is not listed at all. And that is the ability of these synthetic drugs to wipe out the necessary nutrients our body needs for survival.

Can we make up the difference with our diet?

Our Western food supply is industrialized. Most Americans are eating a diet filled with processed foods. Our fruits and vegetables are often GM (genetically modified) meaning that we cannot tell if the food is fresh since it is designed to last. Additionally, soil is often nutrient-depleted. Add to that our own poor eating habits. In the American diet we are getting very few nutrients to begin with.

Can you give some examples?

- Pain Killers - the very commonly used OTC pain-killer, ibuprofen, depletes Vitamin C, iron, zinc and folic acid.

- Birth Control Pills - including Ortho Novum Pyridoxine, depletes Vitamins C, B-6, B-9, and magnesium and zinc.

- Both Antidepressants and Beta Blockers - deplete the very vital CoEnzyme Q-10. According to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, CoQ10 has antioxidant properties and is vital for counteracting damage caused by free radicals. It is also beneficial for preventing neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and atherosclerosis.

- HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) and Estrogen Replacement Drugs - both deplete Vitamin B-6.

- Antibiotics -  while we have long known that antibiotics like penicillin, can deplete necessary bowel flora, it is now known that it also depletes Vitamin B-6, B-12, Vitamin C and folic acid.

There are many articles on the internet about the depletion of nutrients due to pharmaceuticals. More prescription drugs are regularly put on the market. It is up to the patient to ask the doctor about these side effects and do your own research.

Is it all hopeless?

No, it seems many Americans are demanding change and the medical profession is responding - with treatments that are not invasive, and may not include the constant use of prescription drugs. Even the Mayo Clinic has introduced CAM - Complementary and Alternative Medical practices - as part of their conventional practices. You can also find additional information at the Nutritional Health Alliance:

Further, Americans are taking control of their health and seeking alternatives before starting on prescription medications. For some CAM suggestions and healthy eating ideas, please see the links below. As always, prevention is best.

Natural remedies is still the best way to treat someone's illness. The good thing is that we now have natural supplements in the market that's available. One is kratom, which is one of the best for me. Kratom contains alkaloids that have effects on the human mind. It has stimulating, depressing and intoxicating effects. Great write up by the way.

Maybe it will all be out of your system in a year and run its course. Growing up I remember it was such a cultural thing to think of doctors as some kind of mystical hero. I'm glad we know enough to know and listen to our own bodies. Speaking of allergies to that lotion - the amount of toxins in personal care products are many, often carcinogenic and definitely toxic - I suppose it is a good thing that the immune system responds so we will know to leave products alone.

Maybe you will write hubs about your experiences. Thanks for commenting again.

Well I am not doing fine but I am trying it on my own as I can with different things, but I know doctors can't do anything for me. I can't seem to take blood pressure meds, they raise my BP and it is all linked back to 2002 allergy I had to tanning lotion,When my Bp goes up I start burning and would have hives all over and trouble breathing but I take over counter allergy med. Allergist said it wasn't possible after a year. Wonder how it knows to leave after a year? But if I had listened to doctors I would be dead, honestly.

Good grief Pollyannalana - how awful but I am so glad you shared this information. As I did research into side effects - after the pharmaceutical company list their known side effects - they are required to request that the patient let the FDA know if they have additional side effects - huh? That makes us lab rats/people.

Then I think of all the sickly and crippled people I know of here in NYC - having a hard time functioning - and they are all under a doctor's care. One woman on high blood pressure meds said she just got tired of taking the pills for years - and stopped - and is fine.

I'd rather be my own doctor now and heal myself - I'm doing fine. Thanks for writing again!

Ok, big mouth is back again, lol. I just came across this forgetting I had had my say but I want to say in case anyone has this problem that my Mom had bad chest pains (that's how she found out how strong her heart was, went to cardiologist for in depth testing) for years and kept telling every doctor and they said well must be arthritis and about two years ago I started having the same thing, continual pain in my chest but knew my heart was OK, so just thought well must be like Mom and found out in a few weeks it indeed was. She had been on a fluid pill (hydrochlorothiazide, has other names too) and I was taken off it for whatever reason and my chest pain ended immediately. So that had caused hers for maybe 20 years and mine only a few months thank God and I have told every doctor I see about it and none write it down, how else do they find out side effects? Many are probably suffering this when they shouldn't, have no idea and neither does the doctor or pharmacist! I am sure glad I do!

Thank you prasetio30. The harm from pharmaceuticals is just staggering - the side effects are no joke - like stroke and heart attack. Yet, we are told the benefits outweigh the risks - huh? For whom? The company they must mean.

Thanks too for the up vote!

Nice information. Actually there are many case in my country caused by the wrong information of pharmaceuticals, like medicine. But I hope the government help the people in control pharmaceuticals, like manage the market regulation. To prevent bad incident. Thanks for share this with us. It open my eyes and I learn much from this hub. I vote this Up.

Thanks so much for your input Pollyannnalana.

It just astounds me how we can be killed and maimed with legal drugs. As you wrote, companies have knowingly put toxic products on the market. By the time they are recalled, they have made billions. And so what if some died along the way - and now sue. Often they cannot because they have no truth of the causes. It's hard to prove. Of course there has to be someone left behind to sue on behalf of the deceased.

Endlessly, there are the ads on TV by lawyers filling class action lawsuits against drug companies. Another profitable business no doubt.

Just a reminder that we are only consumers and nothing more. Health is not the business here - only profit.

Thanks again for sharing your personal experience.

My husband told me a few nights ago he was listening to a radio show and they were talking about a certain drug company put out a certain medicine they knew would kill so many people but the profit outweighed the payout they would have to make. They also made a medicine that would help one thing but cause diabetes which meant they would make more millions for them to sell them a medicine for that! My mom had her medicine changed which caused her white blood cells to go through the roof I believe is how whoever I talked to at the hospital put it just before she had a heart attack and died. (8 yrs ago she had a heart strong as a teen a cardiologist told me) They say she died after a long illness, end of story. They murdered her is what they did but who cares? How can they get by with that? The hospital knows the nursing home caused her death but they all protect each other. I had told them only two weeks before to make her REAL doctor write down don't change her medicine, but I can prove nothing. I so wish I had known more years ago, and you are right about those commercials and I never get a prescription filled until I have researched it online as much as I can and many I will not take and it makes doctors mad but it is my life!

Hi BK, I just ran across this very interesting and informative article. So many people do demand that doctors give some type of medication for nearly any and everything. We, as humans, generally go overboard with anything that is harmful to us. Thanks for excellent information.

I tell you Delores Monet - even my friends are shocking me. Soooo many are taking medications - I had no idea. We might be enjoying a cup of coffee at a cafe and they will take out a pill bottle or they may tell me about the last visit to the doctor and all the meds prescribed. They take it like candy. Yikes. And so true for everything - prevention or finding the cause or making an effort is not even a consideration - just a trip to the doctor or something OTC. Whew.

      Thanks for writing!

BK - what these people, the patients who demand medications for every sniffle, itch, and booboo, don't realize is that all medicine is poison. Medication, in general, should be used with caution, and used rarely. But the amount of meds that some people are on is mind boggling and foolish.

Yes prasadjain - we need to remember all the natural foods and habits that have sustained us for thousands of years.

It really saddens me that the 'free market' mentality in America seems to translate into the "freedom to do anything for money" - I know so many people suffering from medicine and they are all under a doctor's care.

Thanks so much Coolmon2009 - for your input. It never ceases to amaze me when a commercial for a drug comes on TV and there is all this lovely music - promoting a product that can kill you!

What also bothers me is all the people around my age - say in their 50s-60s - who are so chronically ill, can barely walk, have no quality of life - yet they are all under a doctor's care. Good grief! With the deregulation of everything it has been open season on the masses - and how do they get away with it? Blame the victim of course. Whew!

I understand what you mean. Seems like the cure is often worst than the aliment. I think about all the drug commercials I see on TV, showing all the carefree happy people enjoying life. Then towards the end of the commercial come the list of side effects. To me it seems like the drug causes more problems than it helps. If that wasn't bad enough, I was watching one of these commercials a fews days ago and one of the side effects was may cause suicidal thoughts!! What is wrong with these companies to push this crap on the American people and what is wrong with the FDA to allow this to happen. Oh I forgot.. they have to make their money to please the stock holders no matter how many people are harmed. If all this weren't bad enough many of these drugs take nutrients out your body too. If all the industries in this country were allowed to produce products like the pharmaceutical companies are allow to do, it wouldn't be safe to go into building, homes, use toiletries, or drive cars. I enjoyed reading your article. Thumbs Up!!

So true mulberry1 - there is finally an admission that there are some serious drug interactions - well, good grief - what is the doctor for is no effort is made to find out if we are taking other drugs or just telling us side effects/interactions - or even better, as you say, let's avoid the whole pill-popping mentality to begin with - and take responsibility for our health.

      Thanks for commenting!

    • mulberry1 profile image

      mulberry1 7 years ago

All so true. And so many of us are resistant to using non-pharmaceutical means to address problems. It's easier to pop a pill. Instead of altering our diet we will pop pills to lower cholesterol and so forth. I think meds should be used only when all other means are exhausted. The other problem being that if you take mulitple medications is that they interact with each other, soon when things go wrong you aren't sure of the cause, there are too many meds clouding the issue.

Thanks akirchner. It is shocking. You take one which creates side effects then take another to counteract those side effects and on and on. It has effectively crippled the elders in our society with so many feeling they cannot live without these toxic drugs. One woman I know was taking meds for high blood pressure for years and said she got tired - and so came off of them and she is fine - a bit of walking, eating right, and there is not need for these drugs. Whew!

Super hub!!! I was not aware that we wiped out valuable nutrients when ingesting these drugs. My mother and I always hated pills. We therefore have a big interest in alternative therapies.

I've always felt that doctors are legalized drug pushers with a prescription pad. My mother had to threaten my late grandmother doctor with a lawsuit to get him to stop prescribing Valium to her.

We should be well indeed timourous - it is absolutely painful to watch how drugs have crippled so many people. I've been around long enough to know that these chronic ailments never existed. And the sickest people I know are all under a doctor's care. New drugs and new diseases are constantly showing up.

Thank you for linking and I will certainly come and follow you. I'm so glad we have the internet now so at least we can spread the word.

We are definitely overmedicated Paradise7 - and for no good reason - our meds are not making us better - they are simply keeping us in the drug cycle. I'll do anything before I consider a drug.

I agree so much with this hub. We're overmedicated in this country. Natural is better. There is such a thing as too much medication. Much of the over the counter stuff merely temporarily relieves the symptoms: much of the prescribed medication has side effects that throw the body out of its natural balance. If it's possible to live without it, do so!

Well, well, well...[as we all should be]. I think you've struck a chord, big time, BKCreative. It's absolutely criminal what the pharmaceutical companies get away with, and the misinformation and hoodwinking that goes on is mind-boggling.

Yes loveofnight - one less major concern if you don't take meds. I'm glad for the people that do, that this hub is giving them so much needed information. But, I'm so glad I don't and the whole idea scares me.

I've followed so much of your writing, lmmartin and have enjoyed reading about your FL living. Since I follow you I will know right away when you write the hydroponics hubs - that does interest me. And organic - too, great!

Here in NYC we miss a lot of the great fresh foods and so much of it is shipped in from overseas and is hardly fresh when we get it. And I so understand about people not eating fresh when it is right there. Growing up, I had elders in NC and everyone ate fresh foods and my folks lived to be 100-200 years old (well over 100) and looked beautiful and were mobile etc. Now in that same community, practically everyone has diabetes, high blood pressure, things I've never heard of - and are under a doctor's care. Makes no sense.

Thanks for commenting and I will visit your hydroponic hub. I know it will be great!

Thanks for an interesting read Bkcreative. Like loveofnight, I take no medications, grow my own herbs and buy my fresh vegies from a local source I'm going to write an article about after our interview this weekend -- a neighbor who runs a 100% organic hydroponic food farm. Look for it coming up. Seems like it will be right up your alley.

Here in Florida, it is easy to get fresh vegies all the time from the flea markets and vegie stands -- it is far more difficult in the north. In Canada's winter, I got sick of red tomatoes with white insides, no taste, no juice and five dollar peppers with walls a quarter of an inch thick. Imagine the number of people I know here who don't eat fresh food -- in Florida yet!

But I digress -- this was mean to be about drugs and their effects -- which only compounds the problems our poor diets produce. Thanks for increasing our knowledge on this front and keep on leading us in this good fight. Lynda

Exactly right itakins! It is not that we are all so dumb or just keep our head in the sand - we are intentionally not given information. Unfortunately, many do not want to believe that we can be so cruelly but legally deceived - but we have been. We are also well trained consumers. When I lived abroad and I often travel - no other TV programming has the amount of junk foods and drugs advertised as we do - this is unheard of elsewhere.

I appreciate your comments. Thanks so much!

Hello Amber Allen - I just came across this information accidentally in a small unknown magazine and then I did the research. Not only is it unknown but it is still not often discussed.

Just how long before the FDA demands that this be listed. Maybe it is just too much. I wrote articles on some different drugs and one had a total of 92 side effects. With this nutrient depriving information it may be over 100 side effects - when does it stop. Sigh

The level of apparent censorship in the US intrigues me-and is something that has been a revelation to me over recent months.

Initially I thought many people just chose to live in a bubble of not wanting to know-but now I am convinced that so much vital information is kept from them.

Yes you are spot on re the Rockefellers et al-and their 'vested' interests.

      Again ,such a brilliant hub.

    • BkCreative profile image

BkCreative 7 years ago from Brooklyn, New York City

Thanks so much for your input itakins. What a horror story to hear about how nutrients are used. I am also not an advocate of vitamin pills - most of them are made of synthetics - how interesting that the dregs are used to make vitamin pills. Sigh.

Some of the top medical schools are the worst pharmaceutical pushers. This dates back to the Rockefellers who agreed to support medical schools if they supported they drug industries of which the Rockefellers had a major vested interest. And the psychotropic drugs have people committing suicide - perhaps this is one way they cannot sue.

This is unconscionable - but when I share this information with colleagues I have been called a cynic. But I'm not expecting the worst, I am just sharing the worst which is already happening and we need to be aware of. It's time to stop living in denial.

Yet all the information discussed in Ireland is still hard to come by in the US. When my cousin comes in from England he brings me all the newspapers and mags and this is how I find out what is happening in the US. It's unconscionable but has been happening for decades.

Ooooh, I am the long winded one - thanks so much for your comment. I am so sure other readers will appreciate it!

Fantastic Article-love it.We had a US psychiatrist on radio here in Ireland last week,he said the use of psychotrophic medication has gone up 40 fold in the US since 1988.This was achieved by a concerted effort on the part of the big pharmas in conjunction with 'high flyers' in the field of psychiatric medicine-such as professors from Harvard and Johns Hopkins, who as it happened were receiving MILLIONS of dollars for advocating the use of same!

Also during the 'processing 'of food in US the essential nutrients are removed -these nutrients are then sold on to be used in making vitamin pills.

      Crazy Business.

      A bit long-winded here,apologies!

So many people are on long term medication and have never been told about CAM and certainly not about the damage done by GM foods and just the fact that our overall industrialized food supply is so lacking in nutrients - we are all suffering as a result but certainly a person on medication is suffering more.

Soooo true! We have to remember all that, Mickey Dee - the perks for doctors - which makes all of this even worse. Regaining our health isn't even an issue when we go to the doctor - just suppress the symptoms and - NEXT!

Yes lelanew55 - just give the folks a drug and if they feel better then the doctor's job is done. And we are left to deal with all the side effects - not realizing our health is further deteriorating. I'm just stunned at how sickly people my age are here in NYC - and all on some type of medication.

Thank you HappyHer - I just heard on the news that there is yet another new medication (for cholesterol) which mixes science and nature (from the sea). Huh? Why not eliminate the science and just use the sea? But yet another method to sell an overpriced drug under the guise of it being healthier. I've no doubt the sea part will be a synthetic version.

It is a wonder someone with a chronic illness can maintain any level of acceptable health. Great hub BK. It is so true. Many doctors are always ready to prescribe medication as soon as they hear a complaint. It is easier to do that than to look close into your life style and find out what is really going on. Then first they should attempt to help you heal through nutrition, rest, exercise, and even other alternative therapies if they are available. As you said non invasive methods should first be exhausted before any drug is prescribed.

Hello ramkkasturi - I'm glad you found the hub informative!

Thank you for the compliment Ann Nonymous. It just amazes me that so many Americans have been put on prescription meds when there are so many preventive routes, and that our medical profession knows nothing at all about nutrition. That's where health begins.

You're welcome and I'm with you Veronica Allen - let's try to prevent it and avoid the drugs all around. We have to remember that these drugs are not created to heal us but just to suppress symptoms - so we not only still have the illness but now side effects.

I'm glad this hub reminds us to be aware of nutritional needs if we take meds.

      Thanks for the comments!

This is why I try the prevention route - prevent illness before they happen. In additon, I try to stick with the most natural ways to heal the body.

I have always been leary of pharmaceuticals, and in the event I do have to use them on myself or children, I always try to replenish what our bodies lost by way of a daily probiotic.

Thank you for reminding us to always keep informed and to be proactive regarding our health.

Hello Maita! It's great we all get to share so much information on the net (I'm enjoying all your pregnancy hubs). We really have no excuse now not to know better than to do something harmful - we can easily do research and have some basis for comparison.

I think that 100 hub score is due to that smart little ferret I just wrote about - he was in the hot hub topics on the front page!

Thanks for writing and here's a hug to you!

This we just never think about Shalini Kagal. All of those known side effects and now this too.

One more reason why we have to take responsibility for our health. The loss of CoQ10 in the body leaves us susceptible to several more ailments - which then causes doctors to prescribe more drugs. It's a debilitating cycle. I'm glad we can share this information and can see that the revolution is at hand - because it starts with us. Thanks so much for your comment!

I always knew they had side effects but I didn't really they leeched vital nutrients from the body! Thanks for this very informative hub, BkCreative. I'm so glad there's change in the air with the inclusion of complementary and natural medicines into conventional medicine. Pray this grows to become a revolution and we take health back into our own hands.

Yes, milynch - the US has no interest in good health - just profit even if it kills us. Some lawsuits are worth the billions earned. It is unconscionable - but we are going to have to effect change. Our medical system is the best in the world but that is according to the pharmaceutical companies - they have a pill for everything. We can sustain life but not prevent the chronic and crippling diseases - it makes no sense for so many people to be disabled.

I live in NYC, Darlene Sabella, and I am just stunned at all the debilitating ailments of people in their 50s, 60s - and they are all under the care of a doctor. I'm not and I am perfectly fine. We have accepted the myth that getting old means sickness is natural - it is just not true!

You're welcome Hello, hello. It just amazes me to watch the ads on tv pushing the drugs and while the background music plays and beautiful people are laughing and smiling - the side effects are being told which often include heart attack, stroke and the word fatal. Yet we use them without seeking alternatives.

Thanks so much for the comments and the input!

Great information and I agree that tablets have more or just as much side effects as what they suppose to cure. Thank you for a great hub. I too believe in Apple Cider.

This Is a great hub and completely true. The meds I have to take have cause me to have so many problems, and my system is so sensitive that I am allergic to many chemicals, thanks for sharing this all important information...

Very informative article. I do not expect much to change though. The pharmaceutical companies are to powerful. The United States is supposed to have one of the best medical systems in the world yet life expectancy in the United States is far below most developed countries. I believe that says something about the diet and the medical system there.

Thanks so much theherbivorehippi - and that was the saying in the 60s - you are what you eat. It was never more true than it is now - with pill-popping being added to what we ingest.

I'm a big fan of apple cider vinegar too (thanks for those hubs) - and it is one more thing that works and may not kill us. And yes, Western medicine is not based on healing - just treat a symptom - as if my head has nothing to do with my heart or my feet or knees and such.

I'm so glad we can share this information - and are once again being responsible for our own health. I appreciate the up rating!

Of course they don't tell us this...they would lose money! I had no idea about ibuprofen though! I used to live on them until I started taking Apple Cider Vinegar regularly and now I don't need them as much. It's funny that doctors are so quick to write a prescription without looking at the underlying cause of sickness..could diet possibly be something to do with it? You are what you eat. Now this hub just proves that things you put in your body affect it in more ways than you know. Excellent hub!! Rated up!

It just never ends PrettyPanther. We just keep finding out more and more about what is given to us that are known to be toxic - yes, it is all about profit and never good health. Then the next issue is all the synthetics going into our waters!

Nice to meet you by the way! Thanks for writing!

While I have always been leery of taking prescription drugs and only do so when absolutely necessary, I wasn't aware of their nutrient-depleting qualities. You taught me something new and that is always appreciated!
