What makes fitness such a big deal in the United States? And why aren't more people fit?

Why is the idea physical fitness so prevalent in the United States while the number of overweight and obese individuals so high?

The big deal is that one of the critical causes of death in the states is obesity related. getting in shape is the media message that is being plugged to help combat social obesity. Unfortunately despite the best pr out there getting fit requires hard work which most people don't excel at.

I used to wonder about this myself. The reason why fitness is so prevalent, is because the government, and corporations too, push health and fitness ideals and information. So, people know a lot about it. However, knowing and application vary significantly. People, lack motivation or discipline to get into shape and just give up or only give a half hearted effort.
As for obesity, I think it has to do with inactivity and diet. People in many areas have a very low activity level and this contributes to overweight individuals. More than that, the American diet is rich in fat, and toxins, found in processed foods, which encourage fat production and retention.

In the US there is a bigger focus on how you look more so than anywhere else.  The problem is that there is also more of a focus on immediate satisfaction and pleasure.  This has led to laziness and unhealthy lifestyles.

The obesity rate here is so annoyingly high- thats why people are putting more stress on exercising. More people aren't fit because of how easy everything is now- with today's technology, everything is so easy and we barely have to work to do basic stuff. We can even get groceries online! Hopefully people will soon realize how important staying healthy is.

Because Americans are overweight and don't do anything to fix the problem!

It takes effort, discipline, consistency and patience - all of these are rare qualities.
