In 1988, my employer at the time sent me to drug and alcohol treatment. Brenau University (Georgia) was adamant that I receive help and encouraging of me being successful. I think it was this combination of boundaries on behavior and demonstrating faith that I had the resolve, discipline, and desire to receive help that allowed this intervention to work.
It is almost 25 years now since this occurred, without any relapses. I still consider this help the most important I have ever received as it has allowed me to become a better person in too many ways to note in this. It also allowed me to run a successful women’s recovery home from 1990-2011, passing on the help given to me.
I believe there are some fundamental components in the topic of help – we ask for help when we cannot do something; give help when we can, and demonstrate gratitude when people reach out and offer or provide help and guidance.
