Updated on November 28, 2016

Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Stress is an unfortunately mandatory part of everyone's lives today. There are many forms of stress that can be experienced. Some stresses are due to external factors and experiences, while others we actually impose upon ourselves as a reaction to negative thoughts, experiences, or situations.

These stresses often manifest themselves into psychological and physiological issues due to the mental and physical stress that they place upon us. However, each and every person has varying and independent reactions upon these stresses, which indicates that the affects of these adverse reactions can be manipulated, or even possibly eliminated!

Dealing with stress has become a necessary part of maturity in our society, and has become a requirement for our existence and survival. However, some people experience elevated stress levels, or even astronomical levels of stress, compared to others. This means that unless these individuals wish to develop, or continue to have, psychological or physiological problems that will manifest themselves in the near future, that they must find ways to combat, re-direct, and even eliminate these stresses!

Dealing with Anxiety and Panic Attacks

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF STRESS

Our culture has mad amazing advancements within the last 1,000 years. We have made amazing technological advancements, tremendous medical discoveries, built modern marvels, and created beautiful and priceless pieces of art. The human life all by itself has advanced to the point to where we live over twice as long as the average human life-span was in 1000 A.D. So, how come we as a society never had the forethought to eliminate stress and anxiety?

First of all, what is stress? According to the definition found within Merriam Webster, stress is "a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation". However, this does not totally encapsulate the topic that we are discussing. But, Merriam Webster goes on to mention that stress is "; especially : one of bodily or mental tension resulting from factors that tend to alter an existent equilibrium job-related stress". Now this creates a clearer picture of stress and how it can influence us.

What about anxiety and panic attacks? Merriam Webster defines anxiety as "an abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physiological signs (as sweating, tension, and increased pulse), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt about one's capacity to cope with it". So, self-doubt about ones ability to cope with a threat... Let's come back to that, and move onto the Merriam Webster's definition of a panic attack: "an episode of intense fear or apprehension that is of sudden onset". I believe a picture is beginning to form in your head right about now...

Stress, in all of its many forms and sources, enters our lives. We experience it, deal with it, and move on. However, sometimes the stress lingers. Why does it linger? It lingers because we experience fear and doubt about our ability to deal with that particular stress. We doubt ourselves and fear the cause of the stress, and as long as we continue to experience the cause of this stress, the amount of doubt and fear that we experience escalates until something happens.

For some people, the end result is a psychological problem. They may develop a nervous or psychological disorder as a result of future similar or same experiences. Or, they may even develop physiological reactions to the experience, such as an escalation in heart rate and breathing, which may lead to sweating and possibly chest-pain. Believe it when I say that a panic attack is not of "sudden onset". Yes, the symptoms of the panic attack are sudden. However, the fears which caused of the panic attack, and the stresses which created those fears was not.

DEALING WITH STRESS, FEAR, AND ANXIETY

Most people will immediately tell you that the cause of their stress within their lives is either work related, or family related. These two direct influences upon our lives are highly emotional due to our base human fear of failure. Now, these can be greatly amplified by another society based fear; the fear of not being able to provide for ourselves and our families, which stems from money. Because money is necessary for us to accomplish anything for ourselves and our families, and is used as the only source of reward for the work that we do in our lives, it is one of the highest amplifiers of the fears that we experience in our lives!

So, what can we do about it? There are many ways for people to deal and cope with the stresses of their lives. One of the best methods is to first identify the causes of our stresses, and then coming up with ways to lessen those stresses. By working to eliminate the causes of the stress, you greatly diminish the amount of stress that you experience, and therefore make it easier for you to eliminate them altogether!

Many people then re-direct their stresses, or re-channel them, by using the energy that they gain from the fear and then directing it towards something productive. Yes, I am making a reference to hobbies, and no they are not just a way of hiding from our stresses. Stress produces energy, and without anyplace for that energy to go, it results in fear. If we re-direct that energy, such as exercise in the gym, or go for a run, not only do we burn up the energy, but we give ourselves time to rationalize our way past the cause of the stress!

Medication is often used as a means to cope with stress and anxiety, and many times before any other options are exhausted! In fact, it is a method that is commonly used and a significant portion of the money made from pharmaceutical companies. However, this IS a way of hiding from our stresses. It is not a direct approach of resolving the causes, but is actually only hiding the symptoms. Pharmaceutical solutions should be a last resort, and only used for people that have psychological issues which disallow them from dealing with the causes of their stress.

Stress and anxiety focused programs have been growing in popularity, and are the preferred method to the unorganized. By basically organizing methods and techniques which help people to cope with the symptoms of stress, and then preparing them mentally with the tools to deal with and eliminate the causes of stress in their lives, they have been highly affective. The average person usually does not know where to start when it comes to dealing with major stresses and causes of stress in their lives, and these programs give them the essential tools, fundamental knowledge, and the confidence in themselves to finally do so.
