Is Power Yoga Really Commercial Yoga - Where to Join Power Yoga Classes in Delhi

Updated on April 5, 2012

Today, many people think that power yoga is a commercial form of yoga and is mostly practiced in gyms around the world to be physically fit and mentally alert but according to the biggest power yoga instructor in Sweden, Ulrica Norberg “power yoga is a more easily accessible entrance to traditional yoga. It is not some sort of commercial workout method but simply a new approach within yoga itself”. Even people who start doing power yoga just for the physical benefits absolutely get exposed to other aspects of yoga and many of them get more seriously involved into the philosophical and spiritual side of yoga. Divya Yoga Institute of Swami Ramdev in India teaches both physical and spiritual aspect of yoga in much detail.

Are you satisfied with commercializing yoga?

I actually think introducing yoga in gyms and fitness centers is wonderful because in this way a lot of people who were not interested in yoga before get an introduction and before they know it, they get hooked with other benefits of yoga.

What you get out of different styles of Yoga?

Every style of yoga stresses different aspects and every yoga practitioner teaches something different. So really, it’s all about the individual and what she/he gets out of it. In this way of looking at it, power yoga can be very deeply spiritual for someone, and vice versa I am sure there are many people who do Bikram Yoga or Iyengar Yoga or Hatha Yoga purely for physical benefits. Also, it is a true fact that even power yoga classes contain some spiritual aspects and the class itself is secondary to the individual’s practice. You can go to a power yoga class and get plenty of spirituality out of it because of the way you practice it. So for me any form of yoga whether it is Ashtanga Yoga (as learned via the youtube video) or power yoga or bikram yoga, it is absolutely pure yoga and nothing else.

Tell me about yoga rope tricks and yoga masters?

There are many people who are joining yoga because of its spiritual benefits. It is interesting to note that some top yoga masters achieved mind reading techniques and performed rope tricks according to ancient yoga texts. All these tricks and techniques are mentioned in the last chapters of Yoga sutras and the rope trick has long been associated with master yogis. Actually, a wise interpretation of these passages of the sutras is that no one enters yoga for the right reasons. We always begin willfully and selfishly, if we began already enlightened why would we have Yoga at all? In the past, in the context of Yoga's origins, people could be more easily convinced to practice yoga because of promised magical powers. Today, the promise of physical powers is a more convincing draw.

It is being rediscovered and used more and more by pro athletes. They want strength and flexibility and yoga offers that vs. the routine gym workouts. Plus it sculpts (leans) your body too. Correct me if I am wrong as I am no expert.
