I worked in a veteran's psychiatric hospital. It was demanding, but very rewarding work. No one walks away from combat unscathed and they need people who understand their "demons" to be there to listen to and interact with them. PTSD can be dificult to deal with, esp if they also have disassociated individual disorder with the PTSD. But, I think that "survivor's guilt" is the worst scenario to handle, esp. on a daily basis. Nursing in this field requires extensive training (including how to get out of a choke-hold and block punches), but it also requires compassion and the willingness to uphold what is referred to as: verbal and written contracts between the patient and care giver. Did I answer you sufficiently? I might also add: once a Marine, always a Marine! They never waiver from Semper Fi.
