    I'm no expert, but I've always been told that you should time your breathing to be in sync with your footsteps (or your swimming strokes).  So I try to regulate my breathing that way when I run -- when I start a run, I might inhale for 3 or 4 steps and then exhale for the same number of steps.  Later in the run, when I'm breathing harder, I'll get to a point where I'm inhaling for 2 steps and exhaling for 2 steps.
