Yes, I have had this. Sometimes, if it is the same tooth, the nerves will "relieve" themselves so there is no pain felt. Of course, some people theorize that since they still have feeling, the gum/tooth has adapted to said pain and then "fix" it, so though the infection exists, it is only there without the discomfort.
An acute abscess may be painless with a swelling in the gums.
An endodontal abscess in root canal treated tooth may pain less. Otherwise sharp, shooting or throbbing type pain should present at an abscessed tooth.
