Does a child with autism bring the family closer or tear them apart?
From personal experience I would say it is a definite stressor on the family but has brought all of us closer. Children with autism bring a unique perspective to life that has benefitted all of us and changed the way we look at life.
I disagree w/ Borsia about children w/ disabilities being highly destructive to a family! I also disagree that it is a "burden without any relief".
It depends on the family, and the child.
In my family, it has made us stronger & more grateful for the time that we have together. We adapt. We're in no way torn apart, and in no way is "D" destructive to the family. We have challenging days, just as any family does. Yes, medical needs can be expensive and exhausting at times, but it does not mean that he is any harder to parent than a child with MS or any other debilitating disease.
