If the burn is small, I recommend the following:
1. Run cold water over the burn site for five minutes. Do this only if the skin is not broken. You can also soak your hand in a cold water bath for five minutes. Do not put ice or soak the burn site in an ice bath. Extreme cold can cause more damage.
2. Wrap the burn site with a sterile gauze pad or dressing. Keep a sterile dressing on the burn site for the next 24 hours to keep the site clean.
3. Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen (correct dose based on age). Continue to take until the pain has subsided. Do not give aspirin to children younger than 12.
4. Rub lotion that contain aloe over the burn site after the skin has cooled. Lotions that contain aloe have healing properties and can be applied multiple times a day.
If the burn is larger, see a physician.
