HELP - take two - can someone please guide me through the catch-22 of meta-ignorance and planning?
I asked a perhaps much too broad a version of this question and got a couple of earnest but unuseful answers. Partly my bad. I suffer (start the violins!) a menu of problems associated with NVLD, Executive Dysfunction, OCD, ADD (maybe - I think the NLD explains 95% of what looks like ADD), visual processing issues (can take me 10 minutes to find my cell phone that JUST FELL onto the floor), and, of course, some majorly obstructive anxiety.
I don't know how to plan a task, how to follow a supervisor's directions unless they are LETTER perfect, and despite +++smarts, lack "common sense".
I think you need flylady (yes, really!). Flylady shows you what to do BEFORE you are able to use a calendar, she also has help on how to work with ADD ADHD, etc. Her site is nominally one about organizing housework but in fact it is much more than that and helps people learn how to organise themselves for anything from looking after a one-person flat or condo to doing your Ph.D., looking after sick relatives and doing a full time job all at the same time. Her site can be found at http://flylady.net/ but it is a HUGE site and you are maybe best to sign up for the daily emails which will help you take babysteps towards getting organised. These start with "get dressed to shoes" and a simple morning routine. She also helps you to make your routines into habits, which means they take less time to do. She sells stuff, in order to pay for the site but there is no pressure to buy anything and all the information is free. I like the emails because you get stories from people who have used her methods and managed to get organised in spite of overload, depression, disability, ADD, etc. She sells an organiser bag, for instance, but you don't have to buy it, but the emails (testimonials) from users with ADD who use it to fly through college are really interesting. She also has partnered with Cozi, which is a calendar for your mobile phone and which will hold your appointments, lists, etc.
Wow! DreamerMeg, I cannot thank you *enough*! I am STOKED!! I am of course worried about "the abyss", but you did offer a plan, re: daily emails, 'cause yeah, a lot of my neurocog/ & exec fctn difficulties would make using it a catch-22. TYVV
