The acid needs to be neutralized and the easiest way to do that is with antacids. For a quick fix until you can get some TUMs, is to drink a glass of lukewarm water. It may wash the acid back out of the esophagus for a short time.
Short term solution - antiacid pill
Long term solution - healthy diet and lifestyle
If you don't have any antacid at your disposal, sipping lukewarm water does wonders. Long term is all about diet, exercise and a doctor visit if it persists.
Best way is to watch what you eat..avoid spicy, greasy and fatty foods..and especially close to bedtime..cut back on your consumption of caffeine and heavy foods in later part of the day..if you do get heartburn you can make a solution of baking soda in warm water..keeping a bottle of Selzer on hand is usually a good idea....you only need to sip these drinks..do not gulp...you have to be careful with antacids, as they can cause constipation...if you get heartburn more than twice a week..consult your Physician...hope this helps...
